460 wont fire...

I went to get my 460 to fire today and have run into problems. The motor had been cranked with the dist(points) out of it so i hand cranked the motor till it was at TDC. I then set the distributer in so that the rotor is pointing at #1(i'm pretty sure that it is at 1) The only fire that i got was out of the carb and smoke out of the headers. The dist is new as well as everything on it. What's goin on here...any ideas?

Was the number one cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke? You could be 180 degrees off.

It Says TDC on the crank shaft dampner...is that right or can i still be 180 off?

Yes, You never said if you turned the crank to TDC for #1 in the power stroke (right after the intake valve closes)

ohhhhh ok...i get what you are saying now. I will go and make sure of this...hopefully i'll get it fired today!
