I've heard that if you don't change the fluid in the transmission in at least 60k then don't even worry about it. I have a 5 spd with 140k on it and the fluid has never been changed. Would it be a good idea to change and do you know the amount and type. I heard that adding the Richmonds lube additive or using synthetic can increase mileage.
i think that advice only applies to automatic transmissions with worn out clutch packs. supposedly, the friction material wears off of the plates and floats around in the tranny fluid. So if you change the fluid, you lose alot of the friction material with it, so the tranny may start to slip.
what type of fluid do you recommend, I've heard everything form ATF to regular motor oil and recommendations for richmond gear oil additive? DO you remember how many quarts it takes in the m5od 5 spd
I use ATF in my m5od, and well it runs okay... Its kinda crappy in the winter because it gets real thick and you have to give it a while to warm up before you go anywhere.
The nice thing about the ATF is its cheap as dirt.
just changed mine 2 nights ago. it has 105k miles and i'm pretty sure it was the original fluid. i put mobil 1 fully synthetic ATF fluid in and it shifts so much smoother. filling the tranny back up was a pain in the butt. i had about a half a quart of fluid on my shirt when i was done. i got a crappy dark blue funnel. i couldn't tell when it was full and i kept overfilling it. i recommend a clear funnel. all in all it was very easy. if you can change your oil you can do this.
I just changed mine yesterday. 185,000 miles. Only about 1 quart came out when I drained it. Magnetic oil plug was totally full, and quart of oil that was in there was very metalic looking. The previous owner obviously never changed or checked it.
I filled it back up with Redline MTL. Shifts perfect now, very smooth.
The whole process only took me about 15 minutes and I didn't spill a drop.
The trick to filling the tranny back up is........... use a clear flexible hose and a funnel. Run the hose into the fill hole on the tranny and the other end of the hose up into the engine compartment and connect it to the funnel. Just as easy as changing the engine oil if you do it that way.
In an AUTOMATIC the fluid should be changed every 30k. I think in a manual it is about the same.
I was taught that the old trans fluid would varnish over time, and if you put new fluid in, it would start to disolve the varnish, wich could stick onto valves or checkballs.
Some shops will make you sign a release if you can't verify that the fluid has been changed in 60k. (or so I'm told)
