1 more question. I would like to upgrade my exhaust system too. I have the 5.4 w/4.10 gears and it has plenty of power so far, I would just like a little noise to go along with it. Here is my question, stock SD's with deisel's come equipped with 4" exhaust systems, gasser's come with 3" systems. Would the exhaust from a factory deisel exhaust fit up behind the cat. converter with just a pipe extension flared to fit the bigger pipe? That would really open up the exhaust, but would it be too open? Has anybody else ever had this idea and did it work, or am I just dizzy from last nights 12 pack. Thanks.
Be better off going with Borla or Banks, or even flowmaster. Just my oppinion. Sorry, not sure about the desiel exhaust idea, but when your dizzy you might come up with a few more idea's than if you weren't, now if they work that's another story. Good luck on you upgrades.
In my opinion, bad plan. The diesel forums are crowded with people who have ditched the stock setup because of the restrictive muffler. Better off going with a Banks or Borla system. I've had a Borla cat back on my previous two trucks. The noise is louder,(the muffler is a straight thru with packing design) the quality is AWESOME, and they fit perfect. On both trucks it took two hours to get the old system off and 20 minutes to hang the Borla. The Borla is also made of T304 stainless, so it never ages. The diesel setup will still eventually wear out, meaning you will have to do it again. Next year some time I'll probably be putting on the Banks setup. By that time the stock setup will look bad enough that I can convince the wife that I "need" it. What I really need is the 28 HP!
LAST EDITED ON 26-Aug-01 AT 01:58 AM (EST)[p]Borla and Banks are premium products but aren't to aggressive noise wise. Gibson is another good product that isn't too loud. Flowmaster, Dynomax Ultraflow, Magnaflow are a bit louder. All are about the same power wise. 10-25 hp.
Another option is to just replace your stock muffler. 3" is plenty for the V8. Take a look at the stock in/out locations and pick out a aftermarket muffler that is similar. Any good muffler shop should be able to install it cheeper than a cat-back kit.
