I have a '72 360 that is going to be put in a '79-150 with a C6 tranny, I have built other preformance motors, mostly 302 and 351Ws but never anything in the FE family. Iam looking to get around 350hp(more is always better though). I have only one goal for this truck, it has to beat my cousins dodge, hes got one with a damn hemi in it an thinks its gods gift to the truck world. Iam not worried about how rough it idles or how much gas it uses, but I would like to be able to drive it every day, thanks for any info
well first of all find a 390 crank, rods and pistons. they will fit right into the 360 block. next get a edelbrock performer rpm intake and a holley truck avenger 670cfm 4 barrell carb. a crane 941 cam and lifter set. an electronic ignition DUI seems to have good ones for FE's or a cheaper one would be a petronix ignition. and last i would definetly get some headers, flowtechs seem to be good cheap ones and a nice set of dual exhaust. you should be easily pushing over 350hp, but i guarantee it wont be cheap.
LOL!!! I just happen to be building a 390 !!! I was going to do it anyway...But my Neighbor about a half mile up the road!!
Just Bought a Hemi Ram!! and he thinks his crap doesnt stink!!
But im looking at About $3000 in my engine +or - but I think plus!
Money wise it will take me about a year to make the rebuild
happen!! We have to eat!! LOL!! and have a mortgage!!!
The guys in here Are great!! Plenty of knowlege!! I hear the heads swell as I write this!!! LOL!! but they are!!!
I have bought so far crane 941 cam and lifters..but I may go a roller cam and vave train? I bought the Edelbrock RPM heads!!
I'll be getting the RPM intake..and port match it!!
Balance the bottom end!! 750 holley, heddeman long tube hedders. and a DUI Dizzy to top it off with some 9mm plug wires!!
I know Im missing something?? Oh well..
I think the guys with the desktop Dyno's said?? about 425 HP?
Russ!!! good luck!!!

a VERY important part of this is telling him that you still have a 360

Like fordman428 said, the 360 is OK, but the extra stroke of the 390 will put out loads more torque than you would expect for only 30 cubes more.
Build a 390 - I've had both a 360 and a mild 390 (not like the wild one I have now) with 2bbl intake. BIG difference.
Have you guys noticed on Desktop Dyno that the torque curve on a built up 360 is a lot flatter (I think, can't quite remember). I think it would be cool to do something different and use the 360 crank, put at least 9.5:1 compression pistons in it, roller cam, roller rockers, E-bock heads or professionally ported and flowed cast iron heads, oil sytem mods, Perf. RPM intake, and maybe if a guy could afford it and wanted it ..... a BLOWER. And then go blow chevy's, and everthing else out of (other Fords too) out of the water.

If you're going to use a blower, a 360 would be a killer. The 390's extra stroke gets a little more piston acceleration a few degrees after TDC on the intake stroke, but a blower would make that a non-issue. Plus, the slower piston accelerations at TDC and BDC would tend to make more boost possible I would think.
Interesting idea. But with a blower, do a 7:1 and a 361 FT crank, and a BIG blower. Peak torque at 2000 RPM. But a peak of over 750!
Yes, the 360 would respond well to the same configuration. The 390 does have a longer stroke, and will create more torque, but the 360 has a better rod/stroke ratio and will do just fine once you get her spun up a little.
I am assuming you intend to use stock heads and valvetrain. This will be the limiting factor in your build more than anything else, but you can still get around the hemi if you really want to.
You might consider trying to put your compression at around 9.5, then use a little bigger cam than the 941. Maybe something with around 230 degrees at .050. The reason I say this is because the 941 may run out of breath just a little short of where it needs to be. Your 360 is gonna have to spin a little faster than a 390 to put the same HP to the ground.
I think you would be fine with a Performer RPM manifold, but I would use a regular vacuum secondary 750 Holley. Headers and good sized exhaust with free flowing mufflers are a must.
I had an '03 Dodge hemi half ton. It was a wonderful truck, but they are NOT all they are cracked up to be. They are fairly soft off the line, and they shift early, 5600 rpm if I remember. Definately beatable.

I have a 230 degree cam @.050 lift is .554", both intake and exhaust. Idle is a bit lopey (more than a bit), and idle vacuum stinks.
HOWEVER - it pulls like a beast from 1500RPM all the way through to 6000RPM.
You're right, Scouder, a cam around that duration is quite a killer in a 390 - in a 360, same thing. But it might fall short of what you expect from the simple loss of 30 cubes.
