I have heard many conflicting stories on the rim width of the factory aluminum wheels. When I got new tires put on, Discount tire told me I had 16x8, but a lot of the threads here are saying 16x7. Were there different widths offered or what is the final word here? I am wondering because I have run 35x12.5 on 15x8 rims for years on other trucks, and would like to run 305 (33) or 315's (35) on my 16x8's.
The stock rims on all SD's are 16x7J. I've run P305's since March, 1998, first on the stock rims, then on 16x8J Mickey Thompson Challengers. The additional inch is on the outside of the rim so there are no clearance problems at full lock on the front. The Mickey's are made by ALCOA, the same source as the OEM rims. I called Goodyear (the tires are Wrangler ATS's) and Goodyear told me that a minimum 8" rim was required. I hung up and went to Discount and bought them anyway. I ran them at 33PSI because of the narrow rim, but even at that low of pressure, there was still accelerated wear in the middle of the tread. They lasted for 39k miles, at which point I bought another set and put them on the 8" Mickeys. This is clearly the correct rim for the tire. I now run them at 45 PSI. If I had "X" code springs (snow plow pkg.) I would be tempted to try the 315's, but the spare 315 will not fit under the bed. I have a 305 there now and there is about 3/4" clearance with a used 305. Tell Discount to look inside the driver side door jamb next time to find the stock rim size before they mis-inform the customer. Good luck with the new tires, the look is awesome.
