'77 f150 4x4 9" rear-end
Started developing a clanking noise in the rear. The sound is like a clank to that transmitts up the drive shaft. As I'm driving I hear a clank clank clank clank. I've never had problems with a rear-end before so I'm not sure how to trouble shoot it. Gears, u-joints ??
I would appreciate some guidance.
Sounds like a rear u-joint to me. Try this, with the vehicle running while stopped, put your foot on the brake and put in in drive, listen for a clank, then put it in reverse and listen for a clank. If you hear it, it's possibly a rear u-joint. To verify it, place the vehicle in park on a level surface and shut off the engine, then chock the wheels so the vehicle can't roll and apply the emergency brake. Then place the vehicle in neutral and ensure the vehicle will not roll. Once you are SURE it is safe to do so, climb under the rear and try to twist the driveshaft by hand. Any free play should be able to be felt and the noise should be apparent. Check both u-joints on the rear drive shaft as well as the output shaft on the transmission.
Hope this helps.
