It should be stamped on the inside. It'll be either 3.50 or 3.54. The 3.5 was on trucks that had a 9" rear...and the 3.54 was for the 8.8. The 8.8 started in 87. This is for TTB's which I assume you're using.
How so...you sure it wasn't swapped in along it's life time...doesn't sound accurate to me I have NEVER heard that. In 87 they used an ABS sensor on the diff...so that came with the new 8.8 axle. As far as I know all previous had 9"ers.
I have also seen, heard and read that the Ford 8.8" rearend started in 1983 in Broncos, but some still had the Ford 9" until 1986. From 1987 on was only the 8.8 from the factory. That's why some front axles were 3.54 and others 3.50, to match the 3.50 in the 9" or 3.55 in the 8.8"
