dana 44 ratio

i picked up a dana 44 from the bone yard, so that i can do my 4x4 converstion. the diff tag is no where to be found.

by turning the yoke and watching the axles i can see that it is a 3.5:1 ( about there) i was pretty sure that they could come with a 3.50 or a 3.55.

my question is, if i pull the carrier housing, will the ratio be stamped on the ring gear?

thanks
kyle

It should be stamped on the inside. It'll be either 3.50 or 3.54. The 3.5 was on trucks that had a 9" rear...and the 3.54 was for the 8.8. The 8.8 started in 87. This is for TTB's which I assume you're using.

How so...you sure it wasn't swapped in along it's life time...doesn't sound accurate to me I have NEVER heard that. In 87 they used an ABS sensor on the diff...so that came with the new 8.8 axle. As far as I know all previous had 9"ers.

I have also seen, heard and read that the Ford 8.8" rearend started in 1983 in Broncos, but some still had the Ford 9" until 1986. From 1987 on was only the 8.8 from the factory. That's why some front axles were 3.54 and others 3.50, to match the 3.50 in the 9" or 3.55 in the 8.8"

spicer stopped making the 9" in 83. Ford used existing units and the 8.8 until 87 when only the 8.8 was available.

usually only HD 1/2 tons or trucks with a 351w got the 9" after 1982.
