1997 SOHC (bites)
They told me that they can't help because it is aver 100,000 mark and that the only time they with fix the problem was when the customer complained about it. It is so wrong. I can't believe that
they could do this. We think we are going to get a great deal and then we get totally screwed.
I am felling so low and ****ed off I just want to scream
How could the dealers keep this quiet.
built ford tough my as-!!!!!
..........My husband said he will fix it , but, that's not the point. They knowing continue their work days and just waited for the ones who turned it in, so, that would be the only time their hands got dirty.
Well, if any one has any info. let me know please....
They'll be happy to charge you approx $800 in parts if you have to swap all the chains/guides/tensioners...
If you need exact part numbers required let me know I just got roped into fixing my parents for the exact same issue... They ended up being out $1450 in parts alone plus my labor that I doubt I'll ever see a dime of...
Depending on the dealer you speak to, some will try to say its not that common a problem... Well guess what, its amazing if you have them pull sale's history on any of the time parts they've sold more of those parts than they have Explorers since the 4.0L SOHC was introduced...
Thanks for some info that you already had posted. The one with a list of things you had to have to fix the damm problem........
I went back to Ford and talked to a service rep. He and a mech.
tech. were pretty helpful( believe that
) and they gave me the step by step procedures that they would print out for themselves.
... So, I called the service rep when I got home and asked a dumb question.???? And he hooked me up with a mech tech from there and he will do the work this saturday with my husband as a side job....
.....I will let you know if things work out.. But, the info you had helped me out alot, so Thanks a bunch......
What happens is that the cassettes are made out of plastic and they break off causing a weird noise when it starts. I am going to give you all the three warnings to this type of motor.
1st- 00M12= caution: MAY NOT NEED REPAIR: SERVICE ONLY IF CONCERN IS PRESENT. PLEASE REFER TO DEALER LETTER FOR PROGRAM COVERAGE CAMSHAFT CHAIN TENSIONER AND LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET-ADDITIONAL TO 6 YEARS OR 72,000 MILES FROM THE WARRANTY START DATE, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST.
2ND-01M01=CAUTION: MAY NOT NEED REPAIR; SERVICE ONLY IF CONCERN IS PRESENT. PLEASE REFER TO DEALER LETTER FOR PROGRAM COVERAGE FRONT CAM CHAIN GUIDE ASSEMBLY- ADDITIONAL COVERAGE TO 7 YEARS FROM VECHICLE. WARRANTY START DATE OR 100,000, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST.
3RD- 99M02= CAUTION: MAY NOT NEED REPAIR; SERVICE ONLY IF CONCERN IS PRESENT. PLEASE REFER TO DEALER LETTER FOR PROGRAM COVERAGE THROTTLE BODY PLATE STICKING CLOSED.
This is what dealer pulled off my vin # to see if there was any recalls or warnings
. They gave me a great deal on the parts and a tech is doing the work on the side.
.... I just bought this vechile and had heard a funny noise when it started up and ran. I was told by the car dealer that it was the fan motor.
....I got screwed and learn from this site and talking to the dealers that it was the chain guide and cassettes
I hope by this saturday everything will be fix....
What did this noise sound like? and when you started it up did
it do it everytime? I am looking at a 97 Explorer for my wife and
it make a awful rattle like it was going to explode then it was
gone. stopped it restarted it and no problem.
Tim
Hey, that sounds like the way mine started it up on the next day on a cold start.
.... Is the miles under the 100,000 mark. or 7 years built?????
....If it is u can have it fix free by dealers under the warning code 00M12 and 01M01..... if not, get ready to grab your ankles.
.... I found everything out after I bought it.:-staun ....The one I bought is cherry-out on the inside and out. I was told by the tech from dealers that other than that, the motor was solid....
...I only paid $5500. for it and my husband loves it reguardless of the problem. So, I am now into $400. in parts alone and I still don't know what the guy is going to charge me. It is not a simple job to do. The single overhead cam requires a special tool to stablize and to remove the cam shaft the right way without damaging it.
(those b**tards) But, either way, You buy, you fix it. sucks. So be careful and think about it and see if it"s worth it. Let me know if you need any other info. To get this fix by dealers, let's just say it's between $1500- $2000... give or take ( not for sure) I just didn't want to fork up that kind of money when blue book shows it is worth only $5000. anyways
