how much oil do they hold plan on draining and refilling with synthetic

A gallon give or take a couple ounces. Earlier ones (pre-78) hold a little bit less, but still better than 3 1/2 quarts.

I just fill mine till oil is coming out of the top plug, andi use 80w-90, no problems yet.

Like 78 said fill it until it's coming out the plug hole, then drive it around the block, let it sit and check it again.
