I have a 77 f-100 shortbed. Thinking of installing 302 motor with AOD transmission from a 83 Ford van. Wondering about any problems I might have.......like fit and hook-ups. Can anyone help? Thanks,
the engine will bolt in if you have the frame mounts for the 302 in the 70s,not to sure if they ever changed in the 70s,but the 83 frame mounts won't work, wiring should be reletivlythe same, what size engine was in the 77,and what size of tranny do you have, you might have to get a shorter driveshaft made up.I might have missed somthing, but some bodie will jump in with more answers for ya soon good luck.
Thanks for info. .........It had a six cyl. from factory but when I received the truck it had a 400 v-8 with 9 in. rear end. Thinking of a change in the rear end also. Looking for better gas mileage. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks,
You will also need the output yoke for the tranny, I doubt your current one will work. You can also buy a engine mount swap kit that should be a bolt in for the conversion. What gears are in the rear end, you can also swap those out to some highway gears if needed. do you have the van so that you can review/inspect/use it at any time during the swap? If not, I would say grab any wiring and harnesses from it you can, just in case.
You'll need to get motor mounts from a truck as the van motor mounts are different, the frame mounts in the truck should be ok if the 400 was installed properly. You will have to move the crossmember, you'll most likely also need a longer driveshaft, with a different yoke on it.
in response to your statement looking for better gas milage, you want a small block eight. i had the six and went to a 302 and got better milage about 2mpg. just guessing as to why, maybe the eight dosent have to work as hard. good luck
