Hey guys I have been away for a while. I need some serious help here. I was driving my baby tonight and stopped to get gas. Well low and behold I could not get my truck to start back up. It would crank over for me but would not start. So I let it set afew minutes and pushed it out of from in front of the gas pumps into a spot on the side. When I jumped back in to startit I had nothing. I turned the key over adn it just did nothin no clicks no crankingover nothing. I do have power and voltage. I have lights adn the gages move when the pwer is turned on. I called a buddy of mine ot come help. We could not find anything. We ended up replacing the starter cylinoid and to no avail it does nothing still. HELP!!!!!!!!! Has anyone encounterd this before? It did this a couple of times before adn I just put the truck in gear a few times and tried starting it again and it worked, but tonight that did not fix it. I really could use some good advice here. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.
Thanks Joe, I will have to try that. If that does work where might the neutral safety switch be located in order to replace it? If that is not the fix do you have any other ideas of where to start? Thanks again.
I had a very similar problem, actually at the gas pumps as well. My truck did nearly the identical thing, 'cept it started but ran really bad. Sounds like a case of vapor lock in the fuel lines. Are the fuel lines near a heat source?
Don't know about the not starting. I would guess a case of heat soak from the exhaust manifolds into the starter. Are you running headers or the stock exhaust manifolds?
I encountered a similar problem on a small block cheby were the headers heat soaked the starter so it wouldn't start.
Its towards the bottom of the steering column, still inside the cab, mounted to the top-side. Check to make sure the little "pointer" gizmo hasn't fallen off that operates it.
If that's not the problem, check the wiring to and from that switch, as well as the wiring to the ignition switch. The ignition switch could also be at fault but make sure the nuetral safety switch is good first. The syptoms you describe point to the neutral safety switch being bad or possibly that pointer falling off / hanging to one side.
Thanks guys. I tried the neutral thing Joe to no avail. I will have to look later to see if the neutral switch is at fault later. Dennis, yes i am running the factor manifolds on there. Do you guys think I need to replace the starter or at least take itoff and run it up to Advance and have them test it?
Before you remove the starter, I would use a test light to be positive the solonoid you put on is working. Then make sure the connection at the starter is tight and not corroded. If the wire is hot at the starter when you turn the key to start it, then I dont see anything else it could be but the starter. I dont know a whole lot about electrical stuff, but I hope this helps.
I appreciate everyones help on this. As for the solonoid working I know it is because I did the bypass test of using the screwdriver and touching the two terminals together and it was sparking just not turning over.
Had the same gremlin myself, I'd go to start it up and nothing, not so much as a click but everything else; lights, heater radio were fine. After a several minutes it would spark up like nothing was wrong. Problem was it only did this every few months or so, making it very difficult to find.
After much head scratching, I was messing around under the dash one day when it wouldn't go and noticed that every time I moved the wire loom to the ignition, the heater and radio would die. Turned out the ignition switch was corroded. Haven't had a problem since I replaced it.
jndeere, I think your last post answered your own question. If you bypassed your solenoid and nothing happened but sparks and nothing was heard from the starter, most likely your starter is the culprit. That is of course you do have battery voltage which you said you did in an earlier post. I had a guy come up to my truck in the staging lanes at the strip when my truck wouldn't turn over after some hot laps and he grabbed a medium sized rock and hit the starter and it started for that round.
I knew you guys would come through form on my questions. Everyone gave me good advice adn I checked everythign that you guys had told me. My last step was to take the starter off adn take it donw to local Advance Auto and have it tested. It worked but we noticed that when he picked it up the insides rattled around and had decided that the bearings were going bad. $45.00 later I walked out with a new starter and took it home. Got everything reconnected and went to crank it over but nothing. Did my little bypass on the solonoid and it started to crank. Got it to fire adn staqrt running but then died again. I tried again and got it to crank but when i removed the screwdriver to stop the cranking it still kept cranking, turned the key off and it was still cranking. Come to find out the solonoid was bad so I put the old one back on and now she is purring like a kitten. THANKS GUYS.
ONE TIME I REPALCED THE STARTER ON A FORD
THAT WOULD NOT START BUT ALL THE LIGHTS WOULD WORK, BUT IT DID NOT FIX IT .
TURNED OUT THAT THE BATTERY CABLES WERE DIRTY CLEANED THEM AND THE POST AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP
