first i'd like to say hello, first time here. i have a f250 460 fuel injected pickup and it will not start, i sprayed the engine at car wash to clean it (while it was running) and drove it home and seemed to run great, when i went back out to start it, it didn't want to turn over but after a little while it would start, then just die, no puttering or nothing just died, the next morning i started it, drove down the road and just died again, still no puttering or anything just died, it did this a couple times finaly i got her to run and wen i got where i was going and shut it off, it would not start backup, i tried some ether and she tried to start, i think she would have if i had sprayed enough in it, but wouldn't stay running, i seen a black cylinder type canaster bolted on the inside of the frame by gas tank(dual tanks) i pulled a hose frome it, there are four, two going in and two going out but i didn't see no wires but i didn't look very well ither, anyways i pulled one of the out to engine lines, turned the key and no gas came out, its not making any humming sounds like it would when you first start it. my qustion is this. does this truck have two pumps (internal and external)and if not does the external pump have a relay that maybe got wet when washed and is causing this to happen, and answers would be greatly appreciated
The canister is prob. the tank switcher. Sounds like a problem with the wiring. posibly relay. should only be two pumps, one in each tank. I would try the cheap and easy relay first and then start tracing.
there are two pumps, one in each tank, for some reason i thought they shared a pump, is this incorrect. if so then where would the external pump be and are there two of those as well, the chances of both pumps going out at same time is kinda hard to believe, where exactly is the relay located in this model, and thanks for the reply
autozone carries an external pump for this model 89 f250 460, so i should look at relay, maybe got wet when washed engine compartment, cuz the chances of both pumps out at same time is just not possible i wouldn't think thanks
relay is plug and play. It will fix it or not. Tracing the elec for the fuel pump is not as easy. One other option is the Inertia safety switch. It might be going bad. But being no prob till water was introduced ...not likely. With tracing Just get a test light and a wiring diagram and find out were your losing power.
I don't know if this help at all but my 87' F-150 has 2 tanks and 3 fuel pumps one in each tank and one mounted on the frame just after the tank select valve.
Could it be your alternator got soak up with water and now it's acting up?
Possibly your car starts and runs and then dies because it was running on a battery. You give it a couple of hours rest then the battery recovers itself.
Sooner or later the battery can't recover itself and probably on its way becoming a bad battery.
