Question Need ideas about severe body rust

I have posted a photo in my gallery that shows the rust on the backend of the '66 truck in question.

The panels below the tail lights on both sides of this old styleside box are dissappearing. I am completely new to body work and need ideas and suggestions on how to fix this without too much expense.

I have searched catalogs and junk yards for replacement panels and have come up empty.
I was wondering if replacing these corners with some aluminum diamond plate would work (sort of like you see on some jeep CJs).
Any thoughts? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That dosnt look to bad. If you have a way to weld looks like you could use some 18 gauge sheet metal and weld in a patch.

attatching the aluminum to the steel you might have some corrosion problems in the future

Both good ideas-thank you for your feed back. I'm not a welder but know where to find the help.

With regard to "attatching the aluminum to the steel you might have some corrosion problems in the future" -- I thought maybe some rivets to hold the aluminum to the steel, or will the rust continue to grow underneath the aluminum??
Thanks again.

rivets or welding either way you'll have galvanic corrosion problems so it's up to you however you'd want to do it. is there such a thing as steel treadplate? that would work. but I don't think the problem would be enough for you to even worry about.

To do it right you have to cut out all the rust that is there and weld in a patch. It doesn't look like to hard of an area to fix so I would cut it out and weld in a patch.

You could use the aluminum without any problems if you first cut out the rust. I would then seal the metal you cut with a good primer. If you use rivets, primer the holes you drill and then seal them with a good waterproof caulk. Ive done this before on Jeeps and it lasted a long time

Patches always return in time. If you are planning on keeping this for the rest of your life then get a full replacement panel. Thats the only way to properly do the job. Patches aren't bad and will last if they are done right, but in the end they always come back.

That is the most untrue statment I've ever heard. Patches do NOT come back IF they are done correctly. I've done so many patches I couldn't list them in a week and I've NEVER had one come back to haunt me.

I like to think I have this truck around for the long haul, and with my plan of trying to keep it all original it seems that welding in a new panel may be the way to go. Perhaps some shiny tread plate over the top to protect it as it will continue to be a working truck.
THe new panel does need to be curved at the edges, is this also something that can be easily figured out at the shop?
