351m won't start

We just replaced a 351m in a 79 f150 custom. Engine turns over but will not start. Gas is getting to the carb and fire is getting to the plugs but engine will not catch. We used the same 2v carb from the old motor since it was working fine. We've tried adjusting the timing with no difference.

Any suggestions as to what might be the problem? Thanks in advance, any help would be appreciated.

are you sure that you have the distributor set on the #1 compression stroke, and not 180 degrees off? 180 distributor degrees is one full turn at the crank.

We pulled the distributor and turned it 180 degrees. It helped but still won't start. I think we also have another problem. The positive cable from the battery to the solenoid is heating up so there must be a short somewhere or we've got somthing connected wrong.

Thanks for the advise. As it turns out that's what it was. Pulled the distributor, rotated 180 degrees and got it to start (after considerable adjusting). Also found a very large vacume port right behind the water pump that we thought the previous owner had plugged. I believe it must have had something to do with the air conditioning on the donor truck. Anyway the salvage yard had cut the metal tube comming off of it and crimped it. When we temporarily plugged it up it smoothed out a lot of the roughness. Will plug it tommorow with a plug and see if we can get the timing adjusted correctly. Thanks for your help.
