Question clicking while accelerating

I have a '91 F-150, 5.0, MT truck and recently had 2K worth of work done on the beast. My problem now, which never was initially remedied is a clicking noise heard in the front end of the truck only when acceleration and between 2000 - 3500 RPM's. Someone mentioned that maybe fuel pumps make a clicking noise when going bad? The transmission has been pulled out and replaced twice with major repairs...so it better not be transmission related. Like I said, only heard when acclerating and between certain RPM's, like accelerating to get on freeway or make it through a yellow light. It's quite annoying, since I've never heard it before and I recently put alot of money into the beast. Any help?

Is it a clicking noise or a tapping noise.

You have electric fuel pumps in the fuel tanks, so that will put the noise behind the truck if it were the fuel pumps.

If indeed it is a tapping noise, similiar to a sticky lifter then start running a higher octane gasoline.

I guess you could describe it as a "tapping" noise...sounds similar to a fan blade hitting the plastic encasement when turned on. What exactly would be a "sticky lifter"? Npt familiar with that part or situation. If it is that, then is it something the average person (weekend mechanic) can remedy or is it an intensive type job requiring a real mechanic??

try some MMO in the crankcase if it is a stick lifter. Doesn't sound like it, though. PCV valve maybe?? I had one do that to me, but not at a specific RPM. Does it do it not under load at that RPM. In the driveway in neutral/park?? What kind of tranny? Does the noise seem to be at the engine RPM speed, or 1/2 engine speed, or driveshaft speed, or neither?

I had the same problem, it only made noise in a certain rpm, i think around 2000 - 3500 rpms just like you, and only emitted from the passenger side. Turned out to be a very well hidden bracket on the top of the first catalytic converter... bolt rusted completely off. This may not be your problem, but would not hurt to look.

Good Luck.

Could possibly be a very small exhaust leak. My 460 does somthing similar. I only notice the leak at certain RPM's

I have had small exhaust leaks in the manifold gaskets tick or tap. or maybe a small pinhole rust spot that the exhaust is coming from.

Could be spark knock??Try some 93 octane,if it goes away, adjust timing. If you have dual tanks run cheap gas in one and high octane(AMOCO 93)for towing, racing the off brand trucks. My truck was a slug until i got timing up to where you barley here ping.

It very well could be Spark Knock. But, I know what you mean Johnny. After I did my motor It hardly wouldn't run at the factory 10 deg. Had to go to 15 just to make it run decent. It likes 18 or 19 but I can't find good enough gas for that around here.

Very good information...sounds like something inexpensive maybe? I'll take a look at all suggestions this weekend. Keep the ideas coming if you think of anything else...

Yea my truck still pings on regular unleaded under heavy throttle. If I got to tow my boat or going wheelin I got to run 93,if you ping too much your pistons will suffer. _________________________________ 93 F150 4x4 351

If it is from the fuel it will take a little bit to run through. It took me a complete take until I noticed that mine was gone.
But then again, when I was running my truck it never bothered me to drive 150 miles aday easy.

you said it sounds kinda like a fan,
you might check the motor mounts, take it back to the tranny shop and ask them too, they should do it for free.

Had that in a car before, and only heard it when i really got on it, like passing, and pulling ogg a traffic light Wide open throttle, it had a metal shroud, so it made a horrible screeching metal on metal sound.

Seems like i could see the engine moving a little exta in the engine bay, (but not enough to hit the fan shroud), with the hood up, while someone stepped on the gas.

My 96 has a mech fan, so it would tend to make that noise under high torque (heavy acceleration) if a motor mount was loose or broken. Electric fans can't make that noise bc the fan is screwed to the radiator.

Hope that helps.
