Well, the mystery has been solved! I finally got an answer to the question, what is causing the noise in the engine when I accelerate? ....and the answer is: a sylenoid in the starter went bad! Can you believe this! After all the work I had done, it finally came down to something simple that I could take care of myself. Thanks for all the input...hope this helps someone else out there!
Wish I could be of more assistance with the particulars on this problem. Unfortunately I had a neighbor do the work, so I do not have first hand knowledge of the inner-workings of the starter. I can tell you that the noisewas more audible in the front cab of the truck...sounded like it was right under the dashboard on the passengers side. If you can find your starter, I know that the center piece (solenoid?) did not retract back into the unit as it was supposed to, thus causing a clanking/tapping noise when the engine was running, especially at times of acceleration. If it retracts back properly, it will not rattle around. I'm sure there is someone reading this forum who has greater knoweldge of starters and can give you a better, detailed answer. It was a simple and relatively cheap fix.
AHHHHH!!! The Bendix drive (one way clutched gear)on the end of the starter motor wasn't retracting totally. Causing the gear to occasionally tap or clash with the ring gear on the flywheel/flexplate.
Real easy to fix. Pull the starter, dis-assemble, CLEAN, lube, and then replace brushes, bendix drive. Re-assemble.
Total cost (if you can find the bendix and the brushes separate) is about $30-40 for parts.
Done this more than a few times since I was a kid. Even did my boat starter, used a GM starter.
