Originally posted by fishmanndotcom i second the Verizon....I have been with them for about 4 years and I have lost a signal on rare occasion. I feel they treat me well and fix any problems promptly. I live in GA so I dunno if it would apply to you, but they do have a nationwide plan that i have heard is really good!

I love my verizon phone, too. i've had the plan for almost two years and travelled all over the south east, from miss, to VA, down to south Florida and the signal is RARELY lost, and never roaming. And with this new IN-plan they have, you don't get charged for calling other verizon customers.
IMHO, you first need to determine where the phone will be used the most. In my area there is a company that offers an excellent deal on service with mega minutes, however get out of the Spokane WA area just a bit and no more service. On the other hand, if you want it to work outside of your town/local area, you will find many competetive deals. From my experience, nobodys coverage compares to Verizon, but it comes with a cost. Less airtime in exchange for superior coverage areas.
Also, since this sounds like your first cell phone, I would not dump much money in the phone at this time. The reason is that not all cell phone providers use the same phones. That cute $200 phone that works with Verizon just may not work with, say, Cricket. Therefore, if you don't like the service provided with your carrier you're stuck with a useless phone when your switch carriers. On the other hand, legislation was recently passed providing people the opportunity to change providers and keep their phone number; I'm not sure how that affects the above.
We got the Verizon family plain.
My daughter 185 miles away has a local to her area number and can call people living in her area with no roaming fee and can still call me for free for 1k min a month.
They even waived the activation fee.
Altell wanted $35. per phone activation fee.
