ihow do you test the charging system on a vehicle to see whether it is the alternator or the voltage regulator bad. its a 63 model so the voltage regulator just has terminals for ground, bat and fld
idealtrucks; To get the most accurate results do this 1ST take the vehicle to autozone & have them run an arbs test [charging
system test] on the vehicle if that is not to your satisfaction then
you can take off both the alternator & the regulator & have them bench test them for you this is the best way to see if your wireing is ok or if it is the unit, now this is just from experiecne if the alternator prove's to be bad & if the regulator still shows good you should still go ahead & replace the regulator [ it is like changing your oil with out changeing your oil filter] keep us informed. turbo ted
A 63 if stock, has a generator not an alternator. I would just get a cheap voltmeter and see what the battery voltage does at a fast idle while you turn your lights on. They did tend to not charge the battery at idle with the headlamps on.
The funny thing is now Ford is calling an alternator a generator for reasons that escape me.
