I've got a 99 Expedition with roughly 85K miles on it. I have the 5.4 V8, 4WD. Over the past month or so, I've noticed a distinctive knocking noise when the engine is cold (first started), regardless of outdoor temp. This goes away fairly quickly but not until the engine warms up a little. Has a bit of a diesel engine sound to it.
I took it to the dealer today and he told me the 5.4 is notorious for this noise and that it's not a problem, there is nothing wrong with the engine and it won't cause a problem down the road.
Anyone know of this peculiarity with the 5.4 V8?
Any suggestions?
sounds like it might have some piston slap, fords are known for this when cast blocks and aluminum pistons are used. each expands at a different rate. i wouldnt worry about it as long as oil pressure is good and it goes away when it warms up.
The noise you hear is pretty common in the 4.6 & 5.4 , especially this time of year. There's quite a bit of debate regarding the cause: piston slap / timing chain tensioners / valve train clatter / wrong oil. If you run a "Search" for engine noise at start up, or piston slap you'll find a lot of info. Also, be sure to check the "4.6L, 5.4L, Modular V8" forum for issues specific to those engines.
With 85K miles in a '99 model consider yourself somewhat lucky you've made it this long without the piston slap or oil leak at the right head gasket. Like the others have said, don't worry about it until it gets unbearable. At that point, time for a rebuild...hopefully a couple years from now.

my 99 with a 4.6 did it at 35,000 when cold (ambient and engine temp) after driving long distance (200 miles or so) and running motorcraft 5w20 with a motorcraft filter. changed to motorcraft 10w30 stayed with motorcraft filter (other filters caused valve train noise when engine was cold) and the distinctive "knock"
"knock" went away(41,000 miles no knock). I belive their is a few service bulletins on this but I havent seen them (check mycarstats.com)
If you are not sure where the sound is coming from, use a stethoscope or hold a peice of tubing up to your ear and move the other end around the engine while it is making the racket. You can tell if it's chain, valves, or pistons. Be careful of the fan!
Thanks for all the replies. The dealer gave me a Ford service report stating basically what he told me over the phone.
It's for some of the 1999-2003 vehicles with the 5.4L or the 6.8L. Said not to worry about it, there shouldn't be a problem. Hope he's right.
I'm running Castrol 5w30 with a Wix filter.
Any better suggestions on this?
