I am thinking about purchasing a Pace Edward roll top cover for my 04 supercrew. Does any anybody have any experience with these covers? I want something that is waterproof.
I too am interested in a roll top but the price tag scares me. I have a Flareside and the bed tapers like the screws bed. this means adaptor rails on either side, a smaller roll top (more narrow) and more install headaches. They are nice tho, lockable, weather tight, low profile and long lasting. Pace makes a few and roll n lock also. I'd like to see one installed on a flareside before i drop a grand on one tho. Just my 2 cents.
I had one on my 2000 F250 Crew Cab with the 6.5 foot bed. It's a really cool cover and people are always curious about how it works. There are many good things about the pace edwards but I guess you want to know if there any negatives. For me there were a few.
First, it really isn't water proof. It keeps things pretty dry but I always had water (not much) in the bed after going through the car wash. Also a couple times when the truck was parked on an incline with the front end lower than the rear, water would run to the front of the cover (where the roll-up box is) and the box flooded over into the bed. There are some drain tubes but they are small and can clog up. It happened to mine a few times and my truck was garaged. The other thing that was bad is that the roll-up box takes up a space at the front that is about 12 X 12 inches. The biggest problem for me was that I couldn't tie down a motorcycle. and a few times when loading plywood the box got in the way. They are also pretty expensive.
This time I went with the Access Roll-Up Cover. It is a soft cover that rolls up with the support bows and it locks. It's a quick and easy one-person job to roll it up from either side and so far it's been completely water proof. Also it doesn't take up any room on the front of the bed which is even more critical on the short 5.5 foot beds.
I just installed the Pace Edwards Jack Rabbit on my XLT SCAB, with the 6 1/2' bed. It works great and even the dealer was impressed and wondered why Ford didn't include them as an auction.
It does take about 12" x 12" at the top of bed by the front. However, the depth of the F150's bed leaves plenty underneath for long items. I purchased it for about $740 delivered.
My truck is at the dealer having wheel lip moldings painted and installed - a long story about lack of follow up by salesman.
I'll post pictures when I get it back.
The salesmen and service people all raved about how nice it looked and fit. The installation took us (two friends helped) about 3 hours because we'd never seen one installed, nor had any idea how it was installed. If I'd seen one up close before starting, it would have been an hour's job, plus wiring the built in light/switch (which I didn't do). Lots of time figuring out the manual.
If anyone out there is considering a roll top cover, PLEASE consider the original: Roll-N-Lock. http://www.rollnlock.com/
This will take you direct to their web site. I have had several and nothing compares. The Pace Edwards is nice, but is not built as strong. Its just a few $$ less, but you also get less. NO roll top is completely water proof, but even after hard rains, there is very very little signs of water in my bed.
I's well worth the money, mre secure than a vinyl tonneau cove, more flexible than fiberglass ... simply put, there is no comparison. If you plan on keeping your new truck for the next handfull of years then you may as well put something on that will last. I ahve used them for the past 3 trucks & wouldn't consider anything else.
And for all those thinking it ... NO, I don't work for them or have any affliation withthem. I'm jsy a very happy customer, for many years!!
