explorer fuel pump problem
My son's 1991 explorer sport has an unusual problem. The fuel pump continues to run when the car is turned off, even if the key is removed. He has to pull the fuse in the engine compartment to shut it off. The gas mileage has dropped substantially at about the same time this started to occur. Any advice??

I've seen this caused numerous times by a bad ECU. Be very careful with this problem--if the injectors open, it will dump lots of gas into the cylinders, past the pistons, and into the oil. If this happens, the fuel pump will be the least of your problems.

What do you mean it still runs? Sure you got the right relay? When the EEC relay opens (key off) it drops power to the fuel pump relay coil. You would have to have too many individual failures for the pump to keep running. Go back and chec your steps.

I agree, it sounds like your son swapped the wrong relay. BTW when comes to fixing electrical problems the "electrical & vacuum troubleshooting manual" is XLNT & only 30 bucks from www.helminc.com
