Headlights and running lights

First post here, had my 89' since 89 and didn't know this place existed. My problem now is quite a powerful misery. When I pull the headlight switch all the way out, the headlights come on but no running lights (no parking, reading or dash lights). If I push the switch in a bit (1/8" or so) the running lights will come on but before I get there the headlights will go off. Sometimes I can play with it enough and hit a sweet spot where both will work, but that doesn't seem like a permanent solution. I've replaced the headlight switch with no luck. I know someone asked this question some montsh ago, but looking at the thread I couldn't find any conclusive answers. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like a bizzare one to me. My first thought was the switch but you already covered that. Don't know if it will help but here is a link to the wiring diagram for the headlitghs and such for your truck. Clink on the DOWNLOAD ORIGINAL IMAGE link under the picture to get the larger version.

Thanks for the diagram, I'm sure it will come in handy at some point. Turns out it was a blown fuse. Never in a million years would I have guessed, since the lights still worked in one position. Go figure.

That is a strange one. You think if a blown fuse....nothing will work not just part of em. Hmm Gonna have to remember that one.

circuit overlap-->spare parts

What was probably happening was that the contacts for the headlamp & the running lamps circuits were both being fed from the same live feed in that small area of the switch where the two positions overlap.

This probably also means you now have a spare headlamp switch.
