I have a 01 F-250 SD V-10 SC 4.30 rear. I have noticed that the inspection cover on my Sterling rear has the paint burned off where the ring gear is. I took it to the dealer and they said that it was normal. I pull a 26 foot travel trailer and have done a couple serious trips with it, but it is no where near its capacity (Approx 6K).
Maybe I am just behind the times, but I have never seen this before!
Same thing happened to my 89 F250HD pulling 8000 lb. 5th wheel. Kind of freaky. I am going to put Mag-Hytech differential covers front and back on my 2002 F350. It just doesn't seem right that it would run hot enough to burn the paint, but I notice that the F350 gets warm just empty driving. Although I did have over 100K miles on the 89 I had no rear end problems (with the truck). lol
Ok, the next time your in traffic during a sloppy, rainy day take note of the center sections of the rear ends of trucks. They will be dry! Because they are warm (hot)!
I ask a differential specialist about this. He said " either a pinion bearing or carrier bearing is going out or there is no/low
oil in it" I told him the vehicle was low milage and he said "just because something is warranted dose'nt make it perfect".I think what he meant was the parts inside may not be aligned or machined properly. So you should probably have it checked by a specialist to make sure you wont get stranded somewhere.
Just a thought.
Good day to you.

Good advice, but I think if the rear was out of spec. it should be making noise. I am going to check the fluid myself. The truck has 13K miles on it and I have just had it for a year. I have dealt with rear ends that are not aligned properly and they howl like crazy and get really hot and you can sometimes smell them.
