Rear end fluid change?

How often do you have to change/add more oil to the rear and front end of a 4x4 truck? I just changed the pinion seal in the rear and added a quart of 80W-90 to it and was curious if i should have drained the entire thing and replaced with new or if what i did was ok, and if I should do the same on the front end?
Thanks

It probably would have been a good idea to have changed it.

Do you know how long the oil has been in there?

You must have had some moisture in there. I recommend taking off the cover and replacing all the fluid.

i agree with nascarmark, on my 4-wheeler, anytime i take it through a creak or river, i always change the oils..anytime your fluids have a milky appereance, means moisture is present

ford says every 100k miles. if the fluid has never been changed it would deffinately be a good idea to do so. i'm gonna do mine soon now that the weather is getting nicer.

Agree with the others.

That oil needs to come out as soon as possible, if its milky looking.

If in doubt, oil does not cost that much, drain the transmission and the transfer case too.

Cool

I'd like to jump in here if I could, with a related question: my '94 F150 2wd with 3.55.1 Traction Lok (posi) rear end has 90k on it, I'm thinking its time for a gear lube change, I've heard that I must get something called friction modifier from Ford and add along with the fresh gear lube for the posi unit, is this true? and if so can I use something else from anouther manufacturer instead? and would it be advisable to go to a synthetic lube at the same time? thanks for any imput.

MOst of the gear oils sold in the stores have friction modifier added, for example Mobile 1 or RedLine, etc. Check the label. HTH

Actually I installed an old window air conditioner unit in each my front and rear diffs. It cools much better than water. .
