a friend of mine owns a 86 f150 2wd w/4.9 straight 6 with a 3spd w/ od manual trans. basically he needs a new trans cause the one he has just took a dump. he is wanting to keep it as a manual trans and is wondering what is interchangable with his particular vehicle. ie 5spd or heck maybe a 6spd j/k any information on what will fit or where the best place is that he can buy one from would be great. thanx in advanced. leroy
Mazda 5 spds are junk if you are gonna pull anything, the T-18 is a tough 4 spd tranny, but it's not a "highway" tranny, there is a 3spd with a overdrive(4th) to be found, I'm not sure what that is though.
from what i'm told, you can get what i've been told is called a ZF tranny, it's basically a T-18 with an extra OD gear, so you keep your granny, and add a highway gear...i'm told it ain't a cheap tranny, tho...
Big Bird,
I just swapped my NP435,3 speed w granny trans to a srod, it has 1st thru 3rd plus od. Your friend probably had this tranny.
I had to get the matching drive shaft and got lucky that my crossmember could be turned around and lined up to the new tranny.
Also I had to change the speedo gear from 19 tooth to 16 tooth to get it to register correct.
Hope this helps,Mark.

RAZZ,
I'm thinking about putting the srod into my Unibody pickup with a 390 engine. Is it strong enough for a daily driver that is occaisonally used to tow a trailer? did you have any Bellhousing our clutch spline problems?
Thanks,
Reggie
Hotwheel,
I think the tranny would do OK if the trailer wasn't too big and the 390 was close to stock.
If you had a np435 then the bellhouseing should be the same.
I don't know about the clutch splines as to the #'s ,on mine it was the same. As far as it goes I'm lovin it , My in town gas milage is the same, but haven't taken a long trip to check hiway yet.
The srod is a lighter trans ,aluminum case instead of cast iron of np435. The srod was about 2" shorter so I had to put in a longer driveshaft. All I could find in junkyards were 2 peice,so when weather warms a little more I'll pull it and have a single 1 made in winston salem.
PS are you in NC?
