Took the truck to work today and had the hubs locked 'cause it was slick out. I'm getting a "ratchet" sound from the front end and there seems to be a little resistance when driving. I haven't tried it with the hubs unlocked yet to see if there is a real change. I felt the hubs and they are not warm. Any suggestions?
sounds like one is not locking all the way in. may have a little gunk in it, or it may be worn out. try cleaning them up and inspecting them. just watch how they come apart, they can be a little tricky the first few times you do them.
Mine clicks to if I leave them locked in just cruisin town in 2wd or in 4x4 when it's slick, but never seems to bother if I'm wheelin it hard, so I always try to keep them unlocked, it's been doing this for a few years now and my front axle does give me a noticable amount of resistance when I leave them locked in, in 2wd. Everything works good though, so I just keep drivin it.
I normally drive with my hubs unlocked until I need 4x4 but I have had tha same problem you mentioned about the noisy hubs when unlocked.
When I took mine apart I found the spacer washer to be worn and the hub was not fully disingaged. The spline teeth were slightly engaged on one wheel. (It was warm)
I checked some prices around and I ended up replacing both hubs with Warn hubs (Ford's were really pricey) That was six years ago and I haven't had a problem since.

It ran just fine today with the hubs unlocked. Chiltons manual says every 30,000 miles to repack manual locking hubs. Is that about how often it should be done?
