the engine on my 1999 Ford Ranger was misfiring, not all the time, but usually at highway speed. Took it in and had it checked, and they say its the coil, and the spark plug wires. Can anyone tell me how to change the coil? I can do the plug wires, but have no idea how to change the coil. Can anyone help me out?
First thing that would help some people help you would be if you posted which engine you have in your truck.
I've replaced coils on distributor ignitions. They are usually easy to find by following the plug wire that doesn't go back to a spark plug. On a distributorless ignition, I'm not sure, but chances are someone on here has done it.
You need to tell these guru's what engine you have. If you can't see the coil then you probably have a distributorless ignition system. I'm no expert but my guess the coils are in the ignition coil pack. Trace the spark plug wires back to their origin and your there.

Hope that helps.
Is there a coil for each cylinder, in the coil pack, or just one coil, and is it difficult to remove the coil and replace it, etc.
Thanks in advance.
There are actually 3 secondary coils, each coil fires 2 plugs in series at the same time. It should be easy to change out the
coil pack. There are 6 plug wires, and a connector that goes to
the PCM that fire the coils.
so, i cant replace the individual coils? Instead I just replace the whole pack? Thanks for the info, it was very helpful. How much does a coil or coilpack cost, generally?

Yes, you have to replace the entire coil pack. I just looked on Advance Auto Part's website, and it looks like the coil pack is about $72.
