Restoration is the only way that I've ever known I don't know if it's because I'm too cheap (or smart) to pay a bodyshop 45-60 dollars an hour to do the work or if it's because in about three night courses and a whole bunch of reading and of course trial and error a regular guy can learn how himself. I don't even get "the look" from my wife anymore when I pull in the yard with a trailer full of "stuff" she just turns tail and leaves and never asks a question. Don't get me wrong on the talent it takes to do quality mechanical and body work I am a licensed bodyman and auto mechanic. But I've taught good friends of mine how to do the same work that I can perform in far less time than I spent in trade school. I always belive what Henry Ford said," If you think you can or you think you can't. You're right."
Well I got the Mazda fixed but I'll have to wait until this weekend since the roads were icey and he works during the week. This is gonna be one really long week to wait. But I guess it will be worth it though. (Hopefully)
Nathan
This must be some special unit. Your almost like a kid at Christmas. Is it in really good shape? Does it run? I hate winter because it makes you wait for a chinook before you can even move.
Hey, Bob, I agree. Many of those people at swap meets are cranky and mean. I guess it's because they haul those parts from home to the meet, then load them back on the truck and take em off again at home only to repeat it all at the next swapmeet! That is no fun. I know I would never want to do it that way. If you want to sell something, mark it low and move it out! I was at a meet yesterday and there was a guy selling rearends. I think he had four. They were greasy and dirty. No interested buyers, just quick glances. John
Hey Dixon have you ever been tempted with something you like for free but you would have to wait for it. That is how I feel about this truck. I haven't seen it yet. I've pictured what the truck looks like many times. School doesn't help with having boring classes like Physics, Chemistry, Math. It got quite warm today and melted all the snow and ice of the roads. But it'l probally snow and get cold by the weekend.
Also I don't like to sit around. When I got my M-3 I got home in three days. I suprised the owner because he sold a different truck but the guy didn't pick it up for two years. In three days I had the front totally disassembled (learned from the first truck) and at the end of the week all that was left on the frame was the cab.
Bob, yeah I know I'm one of those thankful truck guys who benefited from your collecting habit. I still have pictures of the trailer full of assorted rusted parts I picked up from you (and a set of really nice doors that got to ride in the protected bed of my truck).
Now I just gotta put all of that, plus my own rusted cab, back together... I guess its proof that I am just as insane, or even more than a lot of yal Oh well, its still lots of fun, or else I wouldn't even be doing it.
Nathan, could you please email me - my user name @hotmail.com
I'm looking for door latch mechanisms and since you're busy tearing things apart I thought maybe you might know of a source................ thanks!
I might have a pair in my parts bin (actually it's a pile but sounds better). Do you mean the latch that has two little squares on each end with a bar that connects them. One has a shaft for the interior handle and the other has the square for the door handle. Maybe I'd swap them for some flathead V-8 parts? Since your in montana you could just cross the border into Saskatchewan and pick them up and talk trucks? So far the weekend looks good for picking up the truck.
Hi guys! Nathan if you could locate me a good F-1 box 1951 or close I am in Regina. I have a couple flatheads and trans. One is the Merc motor would be willing to give them up for a finding me a good box. Really all I need is a good set of metal fenders, rear,
I have a box but would look at the whole thing. Also mflat I might have some spare doors when I get going on mine, when it warms and some snow melts. I'd rather give up my parts then see them hit the junk yard. I am really surprised at the amount of guys in the area doing these trucks, on and off the net, they seem to be popping up everywhere.Oh! Nathan anything you need post it and I will see if I have it to donate.
I know of only another F-1 but it's a flatbed. I could find you an 8 foot box. Since your by Regina have you tried the Truck Boneyard in Balgoney? What trannys? I'm looking for a 5spd OD.
No haven't tryed them yet. On the trannies all I would have is a couple of orig. 4 speeds. You know the shake and grind type. What motor are you going to use?
Nathan or Mombo, both my exterior door handles sag real bad due to worn latches. I've noticed that a lot of the big trucks aren't as badly worn, so I'm on the lookout for a pair of unworn internal latch mechanisms for my pickup.
I would also be willing to drag home a couple of entire doors in good condition.
Only problem is I'm on the far west end of Montana - sounds like a road trip is in order. I need to check on your projects anyway. Nathan, what sort of flathead parts are you in search of?
