Well I just took my new 04 F350 to Montana from Seattle for the weekend, I love this engine and transmission. I was pulling a
flat bed trailer going back to get 4 tons of hay. Anyway on the way over I avg 15.3 mpg total miles on the truck were 180 on the return trip with a full oad of hay (4tons) I got 12.1avg. Not bad for a new eng and winter fuel. My 02 7.3 F350 gets about the same so I figure after 20k miles or so I should get better than the 7.3l
On to the only problem, when I got to Montana after the truck sat overnight, I started it up and put in into reverse, NOTHING! tried
drive NOTHING, step on the gas and it slammed into gear, not good! I checked the fluid level, no problem there. So I drove it and it shifts great. So everytime I put it into park and try reverse or drive it waits along time then slams into gear. Is anyone having this problem?
My overall impression is GREAT and this is my 4th superduty and have never had any issues, so I guess my time is do. I am taking it in to the dealer tomorrow morning, wish me luck.
To be honest you guys scared me with the fuel millege, but I think its right on par with the old 7.3 and this new engine and trans are a great combo for pulling. I hope its going to be as good as my 02, heres to wishing.
I have not had the first problem with my new 04 250 6.0L To be honest, I have been looking, listening, worrying about my truck because of all the horror stories I've been hearing on here. I do love this site because it has in fact shown me what to be on the lookout for and has tips for everything outthere. I will be keeping my truck stock, I will be doing all the maintenance myself. I have nearly 800 miles on it so far, not the first glitch so far. I plan on changing the oil at around a 1,000 miles for the first time, then at either 6,000 or 7,500 and then every 6,000 or 7,500 thereafter just like the manual says. I just hope I can find those fuel filters for less than $80. I have been averaging 16 mpg with the best recorded 19, but that was driving 60 mph for around 100 miles. I topped off the tank after that trip and calculated my average by hand. Not too bad, I am ready to see what it will get pulling my boat and after it gets broke in.

It could be the tranny solenoid, several comments in this site. My was bad from the start too, intermitant problems. Ford overnited it (the solenoid(s)) to the dealer for replacement, more miles on the truck now and the problem is gone. Had up to a 4 or 5 second delay before some of the time.
Hey, the truck is fixed I picked it up last thursday, it was a solenoid that was bad, now no more dealy from park to drive or reverse, she shifts like a champ. Let me tell you all I love this engine and transmission, I pull stock trailers and other heavy loads and am hard on my trucks, my new 04 already has 1,900 miles on it in only 2 weeks. The MPG is great for a new rig and I have a freind at a Ford dealership and he states the early 6.0l
had some issues but they have been resolved. I work for
Volkswagen and I know when some people just like to complain just for the sake of complaining.
I am one very satisfied Ford customer again for the last 20yrs!
Hey thanks for the feed back. I'm sure it 's not anything major wrong with it.. Ive been a gmc fan for years and the duramax has been great and faithful for me but gm has their heads stuck somewhere other than listening to thier customers and lost out in the over 12,000 lbs market. That,s why I'm the owner of the 550superduty. I've worked for a few companies that have had over 12,000 ford superduties and they all have been excellent, so I may be a new superduty owner but always knew that ford made that class of truck excellent. Hopefully everythng will work out I'm sure they will.. Thanks again
thanks for all the info guy's my 04 is going in to the dealer on wed. and they wanted to flash it for the same thing slow shifting in to 1st and rever. after park i'll tell them about the solenoid and see what they say this truck runs to good to re flash it thanks agian
I just took delivery on a new 2004 Excursion PSD two days ago. Manufacturing date was 02/04. Same problem with the transmission! Delay in shifting into reverse and first gear. The dealer called me today to see if things are okay. Well this truck is sure to go back and get a solenoid replacement! This is a great forum.
Take your truck in, its painless to get fixed, they know about this
problem and its an easy fix. These are great trucks this is my 4th superduty and I use them hard pulling horse trailers here in the northwest and all over the west and by far this 6.0l engine is my favorite. It takes a while to break in these diesel engines, b ut they are worth it.
Don't get too involved in some peoples negitive outlook.
Thanks Montanacw! Called the dealer yesterday to report the problem. Bringing it in this Wed along with getting a free oil and transmission fluid change (came with the deal when I bought it.) I figured this is a good time to flush all the crap out of the engine from being so new (stuff like metal shavings, dirt, etc.. from the factory that may still be inside) I'm going to request that they put synthetic in it as well. This is an awesome truck...me and my family just love it. Lousy acceleration though. I'll be adding Banks 4" Monster Exhaust next week with the goal of eventually having the complete Six-Gun system by mid summer. That ought to change things a bit.
Hello all---- i had my truck in wed. and they did not fix it they did the flash and it did nothing it still shiftes into 1st and rever. slowly and now it has started to leak oil from the back of the pan so far i'm not liking this truck or ford anyone other then me have an oil leak and has ford told there dealers about the tranny problem yet and how to fix it suncoast ford guy's in FL. have no idea on what to do but reflash it and that is not working i told them what you guy's said and what was wrong but it fell on deaf ear's i'm heading back home to NY this week i just hope some one up there can fix this truck or i will have to go back to LA. and drive into the show room
What a drag pullen plowen. Based on what I've read, the problem appears to be a defective transmission solenoid. Sounds like the guys you took it to didn't want to be bothered and did a quickie job trying to just get the rig back to you...leaking oil. I guess some service depts/dealers are better than others. Your probably going to be better off taking it to a more reputable dealer/service dept. I'm hoping my guys are good. We'll see. Too bad their wasn't a forum that rates dealers and service techs from all over the country. Would keep everyone more on their toes.
