I've had one for years that I bought at a yard sale. It's loud and noisey - really irritating. It doesn't atomize the paint very well, it kind of "spits" a large particle mist out. They can spray just about anything, just not very well. I've never had any problems with it, it's just never my first choice.
I use a HVLP siphion cup for painting metal or small stuff. I have a Wagner type small airless for painting latex on like my garden shed sized buildings. For a house sized project, I'll go down and rent a full sized airless for $50 and get the job done. Interior walls - any paint with a sheen needs to be back rolled anyway, so I just roll and brush.
My experience pretty much follows Howdy's. Depending on what I was painting, I ususally had to follow with a roller to make it look good, so there wasn't a whole lot of point for me to use it.
Wagner Power Painters are good for spraying water based paint on your house, your fence, even your front porch swing. But it will do a lousy job on any kind of auto paint, regardless of type. You'd probably do a better job with a brush.
As a painter I will tell you straight forward they are basically pieces of junk, as well as you get what you pay for meaning you need to spend atleast $400 to get anything in the painting market. Try gracco, speedaire, or titan if you want something of value and that works more than 2 minutes as well as puts out something of a quality paint job. I have never met anyone seriously making a living using wagner. Atleast one thing if you buy it but it from walmart so you can take it back when you figure out what a hunk of junk it is. Takes about 3 minutes of use.
I have borowed a few, then made the stupid mistake of buying one. My last attempt to use it was about a year ago. I never cleaned the paint out of it. Still sitting there clogged with blue paint. I use it now as an expensive paper weight on a windy day.

My dad had the same exact comment when I asked how he liked his Wagner power painter.
How about the low end Wagner Airless sprayer that I see around town for $299? I don't need to earn a living with it, I just have a picket fence, garage doors and a shed to paint and I thought it might save some time- especially on the fence. I'd rather not rent one because I hate that pressure I feel to work fast when the rent is racking up!

It's kind of the same story with the cheap airless sprayers. They really don't develop enough pressure to do a really good job. Don't use it for a while and you might spend half a day taking it apart, trying to figure out why it won't prime. Like Ghostgunn was saying you need to spend over $400 for a good cheap sprayer, (or over $1000 for one you'ld be happy with). Really, too much money for a weekend job.
One option I'd suggest you look into is a paint pot. They usually have a 1 to 3 gallon aluminum "pot" that you put the paint in. They have hoses that attach to it that are about 6 to 8 feet long with a sprayer head at the end. You hook it up to your air compressor.
I've used them and they're kind of in between an airless and a siphon gun in how they proform. I've opened them up enough to spray latex on house siding. They can also do a semi-fine oil finish. They don't cost near as much, (I'm sure they are inexpensive to rent). For a weekend job, every once in a while, it might be the way to go.

amen to that. i bought the wagner power roller. it was ok but tiring because it only comes with a 2 foot extention. clean up says to run one gallon soapy water through it. yeah right, try 5 gallons to really get it clean. used it twice, will sell it at next garage sale.
