How do I lean out a Holley 4160 600cfm carburator? It is currently on a 460 from a 1977 F150. Someone in another thread told me that black smoke can be caused by the misture being to rich so I would like to try and reduce it. From reading other posts I have gotten the impression that it is not possible to change the mixture is this true?
It smokes all the time. Idle right up to red line. I just rebuilt the carb so nothing should be broken or blown. And I set the floats exactly like it told be in the book. This carb is stock and so is the engine, nither have ever been altered so why would the jet be incorect? It smoked real bad before the carb rebuild so it is not something I did. The reason I rebuilt the carb was it would die without the choke. Now it runs fine it just smokes real bad.
I know how to adjust the float level, but how do I adjust the mixture? Is changing the jets the only way?
To adjust the carburetor you need a vacuum gauge. Hook it to a full vacuum port with the engine warmed up good. Then turn one of the idle mixture screws counterclockwise, no more than a quarter turn at a time. Watch the vacuum gauge, do this just until the highest vacuum reading is achieved. Then go to the other side and do the same thing. If you get no response by turning the screws outward, turn them in until the motor starts to run crappy, then back them out as described.
If you still get no response the power valve could be bad.
Did you replace the power valve when you rebuilt it? Or maybe the wrong one for your particular need. And it may need re-jetted, I had to re-jet the 4160 on my 460, brand new fro the box. I don't remember the jet size now, but I had to jet it down a couple of numbers ( seems like it had 67 in it and I took it down to 65 ). I had black smoke too at idle and running, but it was just barely noticeable. The exhaust smelled real rich and gassy.
Oh boy! I just found out what the black smoke is. It seamed that no matter what I did the smoke would not go away. It was think black, looke like from a tractor. Anyway I explained the problem to my Dad and he said that he put some ATF in the fule to try and clean the engine out. #$%#@%$%!!
Well I guss I have m soloution, put an new tank of gas in!
Tell him to try carb/fuel injection cleaner next time. It doesn't smoke and is designed to be run thru the carb, intake and cylinders. Leave the atf in the tranny and maybe 1 qt in the engine at oil change and use one less qt of oil. ATF has a lot of detergent in it and it can help clean the crankcase.
On the next oil change, use 5qts of oil instead of 6 and add 1qt of ATF.
I wouldn't run it in the gas anymore.
