I realize that there have been a lot of posts here regarding engine noise on the V10's, but I have not seen any that describe the noise that I am experiencing. I have a 99 F250 SD Crew 4x4.
At about 2500-3000 rpms I hear what I would describe as a "pinging" as if I was not using a high enough octane. It only happens briefly as I accelerate at this speed. I have tried using premium fuel for about a month and it did not change. Can someone tell me if this is the "flutter" I have been reading about here or can it be something else.
The noise mine was making was more of a loud torque converter type sound. The dealership replaced the y pipe and it still made the noise...took it back again and they realized they forgot to calibrate the computer for the new pipe. It sounds really good now. It never was a low octane pinging sound though.
Sounds like the same problem I had with my V10- rattling/flutter sound at 2300-3000 rpm under acceleration. I had the y-pipe replaced under the Ford TSB 01-1-3 on Friday. After 100+ miles I am very satisfied. The noise is gone and there is no noticeable loss in power.

I just bought a 2001 F250SD 4x4 with a V-10 and I noticed the same "pinging" you describe. I read the manual and it says that a slight knocking was normal and nothing to worry about.
Additionally, the manual is very specific about higher octane gas. It says to only run regular unleaded and that higher octane could damage the engine.
I have not noticed a loss of power like you would normally get from a true "knock" with the current noise, but I'll keep an eye on it and let you know if that changes.
