After enduring two months of a rattling sliding rear window, I broke done and took my truck back to the dealer to get them to complete the TSB I described in a previous post. The results? No more rattle. The truck is unbelievably quiet now.
While it was there, I also had them replace the rear differential clutch packs to address the rear end shuddering problem. Again, problem solved.
My dealership gives me excellent service and I was in and out in 1.5 days. They even detailed the truck while it was there. They were apologetic about the problems and did everything they could to make me a happy consumer.
Now, of course, the real question is why did Ford sell a new vehicle with a known defect? Differential technology is not exactly a new science and Ford had experienced the same problems with other pre-2004 vehicles. You do have to wonder.
txfx4x4 - Do you have the manual sliding rear window? If so, can you please let me know what it is they did to solve the problem? I have the manual sliding rear window and it's driving me nuts.
I have the power rear slider and the squeak too. I just had an ARE lid installed yesterday and the sqeak is gone. I also noticed that my bed is slightly off. I will ask the dealership about this when they replace my clutch packs.
Interesting observation. The "shudder" seemed to have worked itself out two days ago on my truck. It just so happens that it has been in the 50's the past two days.
I'll have to see what happens the next time the temperature drops.
I have the power rear slider. The TSB for what I had done is Article No. 04-2-6 which is titled "...rattling and/or squeaking noise coming from the power sliding rear window". Your problem may or may not be related but the TSB (I have a copy) describes removing the upper run channel (whatever that is), the rear seat, rear trim panel, child safety seat tether, and finally the rear center glass. Then, you are supposed to take two pieces of urethane pad (0.2" wide x 1" long) and stick them to the bottom lower corners of the glass. Reinstall everything in reverse order. To be honest with you, I don't know why this would work since I tried pushing against/holding the glass while driving and it had no affect on the rattle. Whatever, the dealer followed the TSB and now it doesn't rattle. The invoice when I picked it up said TSB No. 04-2-6B so there may be a more recent revision.
