Why does it smoke?
I just got the engine in my 1977 F150 to run it is a 460 with a C6. The problem I am having is that it starts and runs great, but it spits out a ton of thick black smoke. I put in fresh gas, cleaned the fuel pump, rebuilt the carb, and checked all the plugs but it still smokes. Its not buring oil and it is running on all cylenders so what is going on?
oh yah it was sitting for about 5 years if that makes a difference.

the plugs were clean with the slight brown that is normal. That would make sense that it is running rich since ir just rebuilt the carb. So how do I lean it out? I do have a vacume gauge but it do not know how to use it can someone give me the 101?

Hook up vacuum gauge to manifold vacuum and compare to readings in the following website.

probably carb but if it idles good, adjusting the idle mix screws won't cure a "ton of thick black smoke". if it does have a poor idle after you checked and fixed any leaks you can use the vacuum gauge to fine tune the mixture screws for max vac using only 1/8 turn increments or less.
