We don't have a shop manual. We may have to get one. I really think it's something simple with this van like timing. There is a short in the fuel pump relay. If it moves one way, the fuel pump won't kick on, but we have it where it's in a spot where the fuel pump kicks on. If I could figure out how the codes display for sure, maybe I could read them and they could tell me something. Ford needs to make reading the codes more simple like Dodge.
Thanks for all your trying to help, I really appreciate all the posts.
I'm not sure if the air filter box has a mass air flow sensor on it, or not, I will let my boyfriend know what you said and see if he knows, or can see if it does.
Thanks for all your suggestions, they are appreciated.
We have an 89 Aerostar. It died one time on us in town. We went into a store and came back out and it wouldn't start. We took it to a shop and they said it was the relays and coil wire, they replaced those and it started up. On the way home it died driving it. I know there is a short in the fuel pump relay, but all the other relays are good. We got the fuel pump relay where it will let the fuel pump kick on, but it still won't start, so it must be something else. It turns over real nice, has spark, good compression and is getting fuel. We hear the fuel pump kicking on. The starter went out with us working on it, so we just replaced that and we also replaced the spark plugs. Any ideas of what could be causing this?
Any advice, or feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Ok sounds like the problem I have had before. Remove the cover over the back of the engine inside the van to show the Distributor. Right under the cap on the side of the Distributor is the TFI-IV Ignition Module.
Next time it doesn't start, rap the TFI with a Screwdriver handle while turning the key. If it starts replace the TFI module.
That was the way FORD told me to check it to see if it was bad.
Mine was bad. A couple of hits and it would start right up and might work for a mintue or a day. When it would stop on me I'd hit it again and go on my way.
We checked the TFI, it's good. My boyfriend thought it might be the coil, as it's getting spark, but then acting like it was losing spark. He took the coil out and tested it. It's bad. We're getting a new coil tomorrow, so we'll update everyone then. I just hope that's what it is and was all along.
We replaced the coil and it started right up! The coil must have been weak because when we checked for spark, we had spark all the time. When we tried starting it we listened by the exhaust pipe and it was only firing and smoking every once in a while, like it was in time and getting gas, but was only getting spark half the time, so we figured it was a weak coil and it was. Thank you guys for all the help you gave us in trying to figure this problem out. We really appreciated it.
