Well after 55K, my Explorer needs new pads on all fours. I know this is Expy and Navi forum. But as stated before I get the most and best response here. THe thread I posted under the Explorer's has yielded only one reply so far.
Here goes my choices so far, I won't get into who is offering what, except for one.
Midas is offering all four pads using their "MIDAS VSD" (vehicle specific *****) something or other. THey say it's a lifetime guarantee and will replace the pads after they wear down. All I'll have to pay after that is labor. My concern is "lifetime" these things are probably so hard they'll kill my rotors.
My other choices include Raybestos PG Plus. they say I should not use the "Quiet stops" because it causes too much heat, especially on an SUV
Another offered Raybestos Noise solution.
One place is offering Bendix brake pads, didn't get details.
And lastly through my local Ford dealer, they are definitely the most expensive!!!
Would like to get the best deal, but would like to combine that with the best performing. You know quiet, little dust, won't kill my rotors and of course stopping would be good
Just for a point of reference, Ford here locally wanted about $450.00 for all fours, not including Brake flush, that is too much
Vernon, brakes can be as simple as a pad replacement and bearing pack or as complex as pads, rotors, calipers, etc. As you can imagine, when talking about 4 corners, the costs can escalate in a hurry. Generally speaking, at 60K miles, I'd replace the rotors while doing the pads without even thinking about it. Now if this is all it needs the parts should be around $60 each for pads (~$120 total) and approximately $50 each for rotors. Thus the total parts shouldn't be much more than $320 plus some grease.
As for pad choices, I like to get the most expensive at any particular auto parts store....one shouldn't skimp here. When in doubt, stick to the oem pads (the originals lasted 60K miles).
I have a 2000 expy EB. 2WD on the highway I notice that between 65 -70 mph I get a shake in the front end.. then at 75 it goes away. does anyone know what this could be from? it has 60,000k on it.
Alot of companies offer lifetime service. Read the fine print. Midas will be different in that they keep the information. Alot of the others, its up to you to mail in reg. and then call when you need new pads. I run lifetime pads on my explorer and have never had a problem. I only replace rotors when they wear past the specified thickness or have to be turned and will be too thin.
