I am getting ready to upgrade my exhaust. Any ideas on if I should replace it all with full duals or just go from the cats back. I looked underneath my truck and it looks like I have 4 cats 2-small and 2- a little bigger then into a giant muffler. I'd like to get better performance and better sound. Be nice to have a good low or quiet cruising sound but yet have them stand up and talk when I put my foot in it. What are some of you running out there and how do you like them?
I've thought about upgrading my exhaust but it just wasn't worth the cost of cutting up the stock exhaust IMO. The stock system is stainless steel and unless you go back with that you will be replacing mufflers and pipes on a regular bases. Those that have done it say they usually don't get much of a performance gain. Sound is probably the biggest reason. You can find a ton of posts in the Exhaust forum. It's a pretty hot topic there.
In order to get a good performance gain of out it you really have to go with headers, high flow cats and cat back system. You can get good sound from the catbacks alone but if you want performance with it to match the price you need to do the whole deal and stainless isn't cheap...LOL.
I second what Jon said. Just make sure you keep your cats, b/c if I'm correct, you have an OBDII system, which has O2 sensors b4 and after the cats, which make it impossible (almost) to delete your cats. but yeah, headers (I don't believe in them though), high flow cats, and a cat back.... and if you want a loud deep tone, go the normal route, Flowmaster 40 Series, or if you want that much exterior resonance, ut not so much interior, you can go with the Flowmaster Super 40 series. That's my $.02
I just cut off in front of the cats put in two 3in. tubes two 23in. glasspacks then put in two turn downs. Sounds good to me.
Only thing to watch for is your O2 sensors.
I would like to put my 2 ¢ worth in here. I don't agree with most of these suggestions! If its performance you want, i have your soulution. First set your truck up with a K&N air system.( a must). You don't want or need headersÉ Go straight back with two pipes and two mufflers Magnaflow or Flowmaster the two tail pipes straight out the back 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inch pipe. Chrome tips will top off your job. Don't skimp on the mufflers, get the good ones.

P.S. Midwest Muffler on Shawnee Mission Parkway will get you set up for a good price with a warrenty. I can give you directions are even meet you there, I am a prefered customerÉ
If your truck was anything like my old one, which im sure it is, then you have two preconverters and two converters, with four o2 sesors in your exhaust, one in each converter. this was the whole reason i did not get an exhaust for my old truck, I didnt want the head ache, however if you are not going to change the converters you should be good to go..
Thanks for the input everyone. FordManDJ I may take you up on the offer, I plan on doing something around the first of next month. I will be in touch. Thanks
Here is what I did, I cut out my Y pipe and ran 2 straight pipes (no mufflers) out the back with 3 1/2" tips. I still have the OE converters on it but am changing that soon. I absolutely love the sound.

oh fordborn one more note. My V-10 with normal everyday driving no towing I get 14 MPG. With the set up MidWest gave me. That is why I am confident that this is the best peromance boost for the buck. Performance and better gas milage. Also fuel system cleaner every 3000 miles will keep the New exhaust at its peekÉ
