Food for thought...

Have we as americans stopped producing works of art? Alex de Touqeville (sp) wrote that americans were content with producing generic cheap art (paraphrased) and he wrote this in the early 1800's. Do you think he was right? Who have we produced in the last two hundred years that competes with the artistry of motzart, bach or picasso?

Re: Food for thought...

I dont think we have stopped, I think times have changed but that does not mean talent is lacking. So I think he was wrong..
Have you ever watched a program called Sunday Morning? CBS show on of course Sunday morning.. they always spotlight artists and I have seen some pretty amazing things
On another note, working in the entertainment biz I am always researching different artists, photographers and there is some great modern day talent.
You just have to keep your eyes open.
Art is around us all the time!

But who has been worthy of world wide recognition? Sure there are some great artists out there, but who will our future generations study 400 years from now?

I think the mediums have changed, but great artists are still out there doing their thing.

Automobiles come to mind right away as American art. Movie makers, musicians, etc... Along with all the traditional art forms.

I don't think you can view art as "who will we remember in 400 years". The names you've listed were only minor celebrities in their times, few were recognized as geniouses, and many were in fact outsiders. Very few people during the time of these artists would have believed we'd be paying fortunes for their work and studying them schools.

Think of Shakespeare - at the time a popular playwrite in England. His popularity pales in comparison to many filmmakers, writers and actors of today. Will their work stand the test of time? Unfortunately, only time will tell.

Art has many different forms nowadays.I think we have a greater selection. The beauty of art is in the eye of the beholder.I think modern art is just as good as the old stuff. It's treasured as much for it's age as it's content.

James Krenov and Sam Maloof come to mind. They are world famous furniture makers. And don't anyone tell me that furniture isn't art!!

There's a show on HGTV called Modern Masters that profiles exceptional people in their field.

a little off-topic, but

I saw a show on a 10 year old kid (I think he was 10) who was an artist and his works were selling for tons of money. They showed the kid painting, all he did was flick paint onto a screen and they called it art. I don't get it. Maybe I should put a brush in my 2 year old son's hand and sell some "art".

Back on-topic

As someone else pointed out. In 400 years, the art we have now will be collectible just because it is old.

I like Salvador Dali but he's not an American born painter.

My wife.

The Wyeth clan, Ansel Adams and Geogia O'keefe rank internationally -- thats just from looking what hanging around my office ( prints).

Were flooded with great artists. Its a priveledged community in some respects not what you know more like who you know and studied under in some respects.

Well, musically, there's John Williams, Aaron Copland, Cliff Eidelman, James Horner.

In the field of architecture, there's Frank Lloyd Wright, I.M. Pei, and Bernard Maybeck.

Painting would be Jackson Pollock, Grandma Moses, George Rodrigue, Bob McCall, and Alan Bean.

In the field of sculpture, Alexander Calder comes to mind.

Don't forget Norman Rockwell !

On the more bizarre side...there's the cartoon art of Robert Crumb and Gilbert Shelton. I'm sure they'll be studied in the future.
