I just installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge. Because I
did not trust the existing 28yr. old electric gauge, even after
putting on a new sender. Well my oil pressure is just making
the 10lbs. per thousand rpm rule of thumb.I just ordered the
high volume oil pump,Arp pump driveshaft and some #90 jets.
Should I get the Ford performance windage tray? How much
do these help? I think the tray is for a front sump,so it would have to be modified to work on my rear sump 4x4 pan.
Since a windage tray is designed to keep oil off the crank at a very high RPM , I have to ask how much horsepower are you expecting to gain with the tray at 6500+ rpms?
Isn't this the only reason to use one, to gain a very small horsepower gain at a very high RPM?
Or to keep oil off the crank when launching at the strip from 6000rpms... or in a road course vehicle that under goes severe side loading conditions... either way, the tray is not going to do anything for your 'oil pressure' condition.
I did not think the windage tray would help my oil pressure. I
was just wondering if that since I have to drop the pan to install
the new pump . Is the windage tray a worthwhile investment?
The common viewpoint is yes. Put one in. They are relatively cheap horsepower.
Have you ever had that dream that you are running from something, but you can't run fast, like you are running in chest deep oil? Your crankshaft has that same dream.

Lol, I love it Scouder. They have run experiments that have shown even at lower rpms that without a windage tray the crank is whipping the oil into an aeroeted (bad sp I know) mess... basically its like a tornado in your oil pan. Its always good to run a windage tray if your building a performance engine, even if you run it at lower spins. My preference for a ho engine? A trapdoor baffled pan, windage tray, and crank scraper. This becomes more important if you race it or mud bog.
Possibly. The general concensus is that it is worth about 15HP at 6,500 rpm. If they ever did dyno an engine with an without a windage tray I doubt it was an FE. Being that the FE has such a big surface area on the crank compared to most, it may be worth even more.
There may be builds that might not benefit from a tray but there are none that will be hindered by it.
If I were building a low performance FE on a tight budget I would not use one. Otherwise, it would get one.
