Today was the first oil change on my 2002,F-250,V10,4x4,CC,Auto.
I only have 1,500 miles on the truck. I was always told that you didn't go over 55 before 1,000, and always change the first oil early, like at 1,000-1,500. It's just like "wait an hour after eating before you go in the water." It's one of those things you just did. It worked for my Chevy (110,000 and running strong).
The book says it holds 6 quarts. With the filter and pan drained, I got 4.75 quarts out. Is that normal? It also had a strong "burned" smell. It smelled just like those little 1/2" black, 'charcoally' looking barrels in fireworks boxes that turn into big black snakes. You know, the smelly, smokey ones.
With everything else being unusual on the V10, I'm thinking this might be just another one of those idiosyncrasies of the V10.
The V10 does have some peculiar requirements I'll admit.
Thanks, MP
I just did the same thing to my V10. About 1450 miles, changed the oil, etc. I noticed the same "burnt" smell but every engine I have ever built or broke in had the same smell on the first oil change. I have always assumed this to be normal and attributed it to surfaces mating together during break-in.
I did not measure the amount of oil that came out of the truck, but when I put 6qts back in, the dip stick only reads halfway between the min and max marks. Normal range, so I am not worried. Your "hidden oil" could be in the filter and the top end of the engine or other oil passage-ways. That's a pretty big engine and can hide alot of oil.
So far I love my new truck, and the V10 seems to be fine for what I need.
I have a 2002 SC V10 Auto 3.73LSD 4X4 and just changed the oil for the first time also. I did not notice a smell; however, I did notice that after adding 6 quarts of oil that the dipstick showed halfway between full and add. What type of oil did you put in the truck? I used Motorcraft 5W-20 Synthetic Blend oil. Good luck.
I too, also had it read at the middle of the dipstick after 6 quarts. It seems fine. I was mainly concerned about the smell. If it's normal, than no need to worry.
I used Exxon 5W-20. It specified on the bottle that it exceeded Ford's specifications, so I chose that one. I used a Motorcraft filter. From some of the information I've recieved, the smell is normal.
Thanks for the help!

Regarding the oil level after adding 6 quarts of oil...the V-10 manual does say 6 quarts, but it takes 6.5 to get it to the full line. According to my dealer they always take 6.5 to 7 qts.
Re: the smell. I've not ever noticed anything unusual, except for sometimes a fuel smell.
There isn't really a "full" line on the dipstick. There is a range of acceptable levels. Six quarts puts it in the middle of the range and is sufficient. Over-filling the oil can be detrimental to the power and longevity of the engine.
