Has anyone ever heard of a switch to change your octane level for your engine.....especially the 4.0 liter.? I saw this mentioned on another Ford Ranger Website. I think he was referring to models that use the EEC-IV diagnostics. Is this for real? Or is this guy just confused?
The only other "switch" I can think of related to octane adjustment would be something akin to a tuner that could switch between different computer programs calling for different octane gasolines...
I have a buddy who has a 03 F 150 and he has something like that rigged up with an octane switch....he put one of those "superchips" or whatever you call them I have no knowledge in that area but yes they do have such a thing. As for whether or not they have it for 4.0 rangers I have no clue.
Rockledge.....I went to the thread you cited and I think you are exactly correct in that he must have been referring to the "Octane Adjust Shorting Bar". I found the thread very interesting. Apparently not every Ranger or engine has one as was found out by those who hunted. Would you use or remove this bar if your engine had a gasoline ping? I believe you said it changes your timing by 3º? You have a wealth of knowledge about these things. And I am continually finding new information on this website. Thanks....
Somewhere I read that the "shorting bar" backs the timing off by 2 degrees. Don't pull this jumper to correct pinging without addressing the more likely culprits as mileage and performance will most likely suffer. If you're having problems with pinging in the 4.0L, there are three common causes:
1) Dirty MAF sensor.
2) Engine carbon build up. A TSB has been issued from Ford.
3) Leaking intake gasket.
Happily, all of these are quite easy to address and quite inexpensive. #3 is usually corrected by simply retorquing the bolts.

Agreed.
Shorting the Octane Adjust Bar is one of the last things you should consider, after trying everything else, since retarding the timing has the consequence of reducing power (generally speaking)...
