'99 PSD, When I turn key to start, the wait to start light comes on then shut off, truck doesn't start very good even at cooler temps. so I keep it plugged in and is starts ok. Also when the light goes out, I have no different reaction in the alternator gauge. What went bad?
The fact that the voltmeter doesn't change once the light goes out doesn't tell you anything, really. The light is on a timer, so it goes out before the glow plugs stop cycling. They'll stay activated for up to two minutes, if it's cold enough. If you've found that the truck starts better when plugged in, and think your gpr is to blame, run down to NAPA and pick up part #gpr-109 for about $25.
It could be the glow plug relay (gpr) but then again it could also be some of the glow plugs. Unfortunately, sometimes the failure mode of the gpr is that the contacts don't open all the way when it shuts off and a little bit of voltage ends up being fed to the glow plugs continuously and burns them out too soon. This was a known problem back a many years.
You can tell if there is much current draw from the glow plugs on a real cold day like this:
If its dark out and cold outside, engine cold, start the truck and turn the lights on right away, watch the alternator needle, when the current to the glow plugs gets cut off by the gpr, the lights on the dash instrument panel will get brighter and the battery voltage will kick up some. If you don't see this happening and don't have a meter to safely measure 120vdc, then you should prob'ly try the gpr. If that doesn't help, you have some bad glow plugs.
are old 95 poerstroke had a problem with the glow plugs going out. quadzilla, i think the your mistaken, the old powerstrokes glowplugs were on a timer. i dont think the new ones are. our 02 wait to start light stays on at a diffrent lenth of time depending on the temparute outside.
The 02's light is still on a timer, just may stay on longer or shorter depending on the temp. The relay will still cycle for a full 2 minutes regardless of how long the light stays on.
I don't think my truck is old. In fact I find it's alot easier to work on than an 02'. That's if ya have ta! Another point, the body style looks alot better! My 2 cents, come on Quad. Let's go find Heat for a refill!
I, too, am fighting the "Won't Start When Cold" problem on my '97 PSD. My local Napa's computer says the gpr-109 isn't listed for this vehicle, especially at $25 ... But the gpr-110 at $75 is. Just wondering --- Are the 2 the same ? Interchangable ? Side note: My local Non-Napa store quoted me $369 for a relay. No thank you.
Mark----I purchased NAPA 109 and it seems to work for me.. I had to turn the unit a quarter of a turn and use one one hold down bolt, seems to be the only difference. My old unit didn't light my test light when key was turned on, this unit does. It still doe not have any variation in my amp gauge when the unit kicks off like some people talk about. Price was $22.
