I have just installed a Crane Cams Fireball XR-i ignition conversion and I am needing to know if I need to change the spark plug gap and ignition timing?
You should run about .050 to .060 on the plugs. The ignition timing can possibly be retarded a little more with no ill effects but you can leave it where its at for now. Play with it later.
you may want to look at geting a crane ign timeing recurve kit part# 99607-1. that is the number for the elec ign kit. the kit also has an adjustable vacume advance on it. I have one and it fixed my pinging problem. the reason I mention this is it sounds like you are going for more power. by recurveing the timeing you can bump up the total advance and get the most out of your new ign system. just a thought I wanted to share. but like rat said, one thing at a time. good luck.
Power would be good but not necessarily the reason for my post. I am just wanting to get what I can out of it. I hate gapping points and just wanted it to be a bit more modern.
I have also installed an electronic ignition style post cap and rotor from Accel. Right now it has some cheap 7mm wires. What size wires would be better and not be a useless overkill?
It also has a Mallory 45,000 volt internal resistance coil I put on years ago.
OK I'm tracking with you now. as far as the wires go. any 8mm or 8.5 mm wire will do a good job. the 8mm wires are good for every day driveing. the 8.5 are used for raceing. and since you have boosed the spark out put you are on the right track there. I am running 8mm accel wires and am very happy. when you say new post cap, I am asumeing you mean the larger diameter? thats what you want to help stop cross fire. and when you get your wires, please make the investment in some quality wire looms to seperate and protect your new wires.
