Ok, I am too lazy to do a search, but I was wondering what some of you guys are running for cams in your 390s. I am looking for a good low end cam that might even get a little better milage than stock. I plan to run dual plane 4 bbl. and headers. It is on a stick shift crewcab. I don't have it home yet so I am not sure of the gear ratio.
When I rebuild it I will probably do a gasket match and a little port clean up.
You can call crane cams, comp cams etc... and tell them what you want and what you have (gears compression etc.. ) they will tell you what cam would work best.
Oh yeah, I realize they all have good tech lines, I was just wondering what other members were using. I would probably lean toward CompCams. I had one of their 260 grinds in a 300-6 and it really woke it up. Mild port clean up and gasket match with stock carb and manifolds and it would do almost 100 in third with 3.73s and bury the speedo in 4th. Off idle was a lot better all the way through.
Comp cams has had a bad rep with the FE due to improperly cut distributor Drive teeth. I'm sure they have cleared this up by now and there are many people running them with good success. I think they have some awesome lobe profiles on their extreme energy cams though. Take a look at the crane 343901 cam. It has pleased many people on here. I have gotten 12MPG with mt engine and gas mileage was the last thing on my mind when I built it. I run the quite larger 343801 cam.
You can type these numbers in at www.cranecams.com and it will show you all the specs.
Unless you have done a little porting to the heads you will want to run a dual pattern cam with your 390. The exhaust lobe being bigger of course. The stock heads flow rather poorly and this is compounded by the worst exhaust manifold design in history.
Thanks Ratsmoker. I never knew about the CompCams dist. gear problems. I figured the FE would be more happy with a dual pattern. The stock manifolds are out. I am still researching my header choice. I want headers that allow easy removal of the starter and don't roast it to an early death.
