Simple. Use paper plates, cups............

Or eat out more often

Just tell them your expectation and reward them when they do it right.

I don't care because I don't do them. The boy puts them in the sink, and either my wife or father-in-law deals with them later.

Life is tuff isn't it.

If it's children (18 and under) whatever they do "wastefully" reflects on their allowances. I have a list of things that I have caught them doing that wastes energy...and the list just keeps getting bigger. But it works.
Last night I heard one tell the other that they were running hot water instead of cold to rinse the dishes off before putting them in the dishwasher. Money talks.

Is this a single or double sink?

Double sink,
Just let them put a bunch of hot water for rinsing in the one side and wash in the other.
Telling them it's the dunking method.

I try & make work.... more fun.

Single sink : They are plotting

Plotting to do such a bad job of it, they won't be asked to do again .

Use the dishwasher (not the human model). If that's not an option, install a serious flow restrictor. Docking their allowance is also a real good one.

Turn down the water temp to 120 deg. Install a restricter. Put in one of those fausets they have in public restrooms where you have to hold the handle to keep the water running. Buy a dishwasher.

Go to A good sports man store and buy an electric no bark coller the kind used on dogs. When you think it is time for them to stop wasting water just give them a good zap.

When I wash dishes by hand I leave the water running constantly......but a slow trickle. It would be very annoying turning the water on and off. Is water expensive where you guys are?

Most sinks have two sides.

Fill one side with hot soapy water, put dishes in.
Then wash them and stack in the other empty side.

When empty side becomes full, load soapy water again with more dishes, while they are sitting dissolving stuck on food, rinse the washed dishes all at once.

Best thing to have is three sinks. One for soapy water, one rinse water, one clean water. Start with glasses and lightly soiled things. Only water you really have to change is the clear water.
