Was turing over starter and what seemed to be right in mid crank it stopped. Did not feel that batt ran down. Was able to pull truck backwards about 6-8 feet while in 5th gear to take off any pressure off cylinder in case it had too much pressure. When I turn the key, it sounds like the starter in kicking in but will not turn.
Help! driveway blocked with truck!
Jim, make sure the batteries are up to snuff ! Pay attention to the glow plug system when you first turn the key on. You should only jump start off the passenger side battery if necessary. check the connections on the solenoid to the starter. If all the above is okay, with key off and out of gear (standard) try turning the engine over using a breaker bar and socket into the dampner ... probably from underneath is easier. Also want to check oil level to make sure antifreeze isnt in the crankcase from unknown problem. Good luck and keep us posted.
If when ya turn the key ya just here a loud click. ya have either a bad starter or bad connection on the relay located on top of the starter. If the starter just spins but does not engae the engine ya probally have a bad solinioed. somtimes ya can get lucky and soak the end of the starter with wd 40 and give her a wack with a hammer while having a assistant hold the key down and it will start even with a abd starter. Just please make sure its not in gear. turning the engine over by hand with a breaker bar would be a good idea to make sure somthen in the engnie didnt decide to let go on ya. good luck
Has a full charge. The battery connectors aren't the best but I was able to drive a wedge in to make a good connection with the same results. NOT Cranking. Red,Would a starter go bad in the middle of turning?
Like Red said go ahead and try turning it over with a bar,in fact try turning it backwards in case its hydrolocked, you dont want to bend a rod.You have a couple of choices 1,pull the starter and have it tested.2,pull the glo plugs and try turning by hand,if its hyrolocked you will get water out the gp holes without bending anything.Usually a starter will start slowin down before it quits however it can give out pretty fast,as we hope is your case.Good luck.
starters are funny things ive seen them just go all of the suuden and ive seen them show signs for years before they ever go. it all depends what exactly went on yar starter. aka a bearing seizing up on the starter would quit rite away. were brushes wereing would quit over a few months maybe years. Try turning it over by hand it shouldnt take that much force to turn it over. If it does pull the glow plugs and then try to turn it over.
Sounds like the starter is dead to me. You already pulled the truck backwards, did the motor turn over?
Had one on my truck did just what yours did, started to crank and just quit.
Had one that just got slower and slower and slower. Was still turning the engine over when I took it off, it was just so slow the truck would not start.
Did Pull Backwards in 5th. Motor turned over(backwards). The positive wire (upon closer look) is corroded badly. Am replacing it. Even if it's the starter, this needs replacing anyway. ill keep you informed. Thanks for the (as usual) good advice.
Just finished installing the new batt cables. Guess what... It runs again. Boy, those old ones were sure corroded. Also, Starter turns about twice as fast.
Thanks again.
