1998 F150 & 1997 F150 I replaced the front rotors, calipers, pads, and flex hoses on these trucks. the 98 is mine and the 97 is my father inlaws,on both trucks the left front brake is dragging and I cannot find a cure. The Ford dealer say's the problem does not exhist. Green and ross says it is the block in the left flex hose.
On the 97 we have changed the rotors, pads, and calipers THREE [3] times but no change.
Back to my 98, the brake seems to work for a while after dismantling and reinstalling ,then draggs again. I got less than 1500 km out of the last set,and my new rotor is bad the 98 has 76000km and the 97 has 77000km.there was never a problem until we needed new pads.
Thanks Len
Forget about the front brakes and focus on the rear.
I went through the same scenario myself a few months ago. The caliper pistons simply would not retract back into the caliper enough to allow the wheel to turn. It started with the left front dragging severely and the right dragging some. Chronolgically: I replaced:
Fluid
Calipers
Hoses
Master cylinder
None of the above changed the situation.
I resolved it by replacing the rear drum hardware, shoes and wheel cylinders. I'm not sure which one of these were the problem, but it's gone now. I went from 11 MPG back up to 17 MPG under the same conditions.
Nowhere did I find any information indicating that problems with the rear brakes could cause dragging front calipers, so I didn't even consider it.
I too used Napa parts. Their "United" brand is very high quality.
Aj, did your rear shoes have any cracks in them? And, did you replace "ALL" the hardware, including the self adjusters? I just recently had my tires rotated and balanced and I asked the tech to let me see my rear brakes. They had cracks in them and he said it was from dragging, possibly by the emergency brake cable partially stuck.Maybe if I do the same as you I will increase mileage too. Hmmmmm.......
Thanks when I first bought the truck new the rear brakes were not working so I took it back to dealer and it was corrected.I will look it to this as I already have a new set of shoes on the shelf to put on,it may be the case because the rear shoes are still hardly worn. Thanks Len

The shoes looked fine. When I compared the original shoes to the new ones, I couldn't see any difference. When I adjusted the shoes before installing the drums however, I found that the self-adjuster needed to be completely closed to fit the drums over the new shoes. I also found that the parking brake now engages immediately and firmly, whereas before it didn't engage until fully extended.
No, I didn't replace any of the self-adjusting components, just the springs, wheels cylinders and shoes. If I had to do it again, I'd splurge on the self-adjusting repair kit as well.
