Auto. Transmission Overdrive
I posted on this subject to the transmission forum a while back but had no response so I am trying here. Thanks
Is the issue of how the transmission works when driving in town, esp. shifting into od at 40 - 45 and then of course right out again when you slow down really a problem for the life of the transmission? I have always found this annoying, but until someone mentioned it recently, never thought about it being bad for the transmission. I usually try to remember to switch off the od when starting, but it seems like it would have been easier for the switch to be designed the reverse of what it is. It would probably help if the trans. didn't go into od until at least 50mph even if letting off the gas, but that is probably not adjustable. I would like it to not shift in and out of od so frequently, but I can live with it if it is not shortening the life of the transmission and the od301 mentioned below is not a highly recommended option.
Does anyone have experience with the Intermotive OD 301? www.intermotive.net/od1.htm The web site says it takes 10 - 15 minutes to install and is easy. I read the directions and I'm not sure I can do it with my limited experience. 10 - 15 minutes certainly seems impossible. Especially the part about removing the instrument cluster. I have sent e-mails to them about cost and installation, but have not been contacted. If someone has actually used this, what did you pay, how happy are you with it and how was the installation?
F350. With each of these I have seldom locked out the OD even when pulling a 37' 5th whlr. Exceptions have been on rolling hills and steep grades. Never a problem. Hope this gives you some insight.
One caution, with auto trans high fluid temp (sustained 240F) equates to failure.
