My '94 F-350 failed the other day with an electical short smell and then 20A fuse 11 blowing. I've replaced fuse 11 and it runs. It starts a bit more slowly. I've looked at the schematics and Fuse 11 controls juice to the glowplugs (among other things). There are 2 fusible links between Fuse 11 and the glowplugs. My suspicion is that one of the fusible links failed and is now open. This would mean only half the glowplugs are working which would explain the harder starting.
My question: where are the fusible links and what do they look like?
The fussible links are atleast on my truck next to the passnger side battery. they look like a piece of wire. they are stamped fusible link on the side and are normally smaller in diamter then the wiring coming and going to them. ya have to replace with the same lenght and gauge of fussible link or ya risk a fire. If yar fuse blew tho i would suspect that its not the fusible links but that ya ahve a loose or dirty connector wich casued a high amp draw and then burned itself out. the new fuse dont blow since the connector is no burned out and the truck starts slower since only half or some of the glow plugs are working. thats just a theroy but well worth looking into. What i would do is test each wire going to the glow plugs for juice with a voltmeter. ya want all yar plugs working or ya risk burning out the plugs ya do have working now. If all have juice i would test for burnt out glow plugs with a voltmeter. good luck
I couldn't find anything looking what I think a fusible link would be. I know the electrical short smell seemed to come from the driver side of the engine compartment near the fuse box.
I've tried to get to the glow plug connections w/out taking a bunch of stuff off... I'm only able to get to one (front driver side) easily. I'll probably make a tool to reach in to pull the ones I can't reach.
Anyone out there w/ a '94 know where the fusible links are?
