I feel a funny vibration in my gas pedal when driving my 96 Ranger 4x4/3.0. At first I suspected it was time that the bearings need to be repacked, but I certainly wouldnt think I should feel it in the gas pedal only. Could this be something with the throttle body? The whole truck does vibrate, but it's weird how I can feel it on the gas pedal. It baffles me what this could be...and ideas? Could this be a sign of the rear end going bad? Any foolproof ways to tell if the rear end is starting to go? Or could this be a tranny mount or something along those lines?
The first thing you have to determine is whether the vibration is speed related or engine related.
Does it steadily increase with ground speed or does it increase and decrease as the tranny upshifts or down shifts?
Well to be honest, it doesnt seem to matter if its upon acceleration or at constant speed. Nor does it matter if its upon the tranny shifting or not. I guess it's weird to explain, but I feel it most at the first half of the acceleration (when the pedal hits about one third the way) is when i start to feel it the most. Honestly it feels like there is a cable sticking or something. The engine seems to run relatively smoot considering the 135,000+ miles shes carrying.
From under the truck, push up on the tranny tailshaft. While you are doing that, watch the tranny mount at the crossmember. If you've got like an inch of travel upwards, then the mount is on it's way out.
well i crawled under the junker today and tried to budge the tranny to no avail. So I'm guessing that eliminates the tranny mounts as the culprit. Is it possible for the throttle cable to get corroded and be kind of "sticky" upon acceleration? Maybe I should investigate that a bit
If the throttle cable is sticking, you should be able to feel it when the engine is not running. Try it to see if the throttle feels smooth all the way to the floor. I have doubts that your problem is the cable. If the whole truck vibrates, it sounds more like a u-joint, hangar bearing, or wheel bearing.
